WHY JAMES IBORI’S NAME SHOULD BE WRITTEN IN THE GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS

Without a doubt, Chief James Onanefe Ibori the strong man of Oghara kingdom/clan, Ethiope West LGA, Delta State popularly known as the Odidigborigbo of Africa, should have his name written in Guinness Book of Records as THE MOST OUTSTANDING POLITICIAN WITH A RECORD LIKE NO OTHER in the world. This is hinged on the fact that Ibori remains the most qualified politician, amongst other Nigerian politicians, who has left an unforgettable mark/footprint in the history of political meandering, and yet still remains the most celebrated and appreciated by some Urhobo elite followers, for having exported their collective public wealth/money to the UK, and was also given the most lavish welcome reception anyone could get – having returned from a UK prison sentence.
For being able to turn the occasion of his return from UK prison, that calls for penitence, repentance and soberness, into a carnival of some sort, and is still able to command the honour and respect being given to him by some big men/elites of Urhobo land for demonstrating bravery in stealing their collective public wealth to the UK; Indeed, James Ibori surely deserves to have his name written in the Guinness Book of Records. Wouldn’t you agree with me?
I know some of my critics, friends, kinsmen and relatives will say that “Zik Gbemre is too critical of Ibori. Na only Ibori don thief before. I beg make you leave Ibori alone.” Agreed that Ibori is not the only public thief in Nigeria’s political space, but Ibori remains the only Nigerian politician that was jailed in the UK with his wife, his sister, his mistress and his lawyer. Hardly can any Nigerian politician beat that record. As far as I am concerned, Ibori deserves a special place in the Guinness Book of Records. We say Kudos to His Excellency, Chief James Ibori, and his group of some Urhobo elite followers. They stand for him whenever he arrives any social and political event/gathering in Delta State, including those that are older than him. They still consult Ibori to take his so-called blessings before getting appointments or being elected.
However, one question that needs to be asked is, should a man of Ibori’s stature and record, be celebrated and appreciated for having served a jail term over financial crimes he committed against Delta State? Should a person like Ibori, be allowed to anoint every person that will be elected or appointed at different levels of Delta State Government? What justifications can they muster, to have allowed Ibori to continue lording it over some Urhobo elites, some of whom have been turned into ‘morons’, by accepting Ibori as their leader. No sane society and group of people, will reward and accept such a man and take him as their leader. I only implore those Urhobo elites, that still think straight and are known to be on the right path, not to accept Ibori as their leader, and not allow him dictate to them concerning affairs of the Urhobo nation and Delta State. If Ibori is still celebrated, after proven to have stolen public funds, what then is the example are we leaving behind for the upcoming generations? We are invariably giving them the license to steal public wealth.
For Ibori, he needs to be remorseful, repent, remain calm, lead a new life and avoid being a ‘political rascal’ that he has been known for, which caused the indictment of himself, wife, sister, mistress and lawyer in the UK. Those Urhobo elites hailing and rallying round him are not helping him. Those telling Ibori that he is still their leader, are just deceiving him.
Zik Gbemre.
