WHO IS TO BE BLAMED FOR DELTA STATE'S UNDERDEVELOPMENT?
The subject question is one that resonates every time we take a critical look at Delta State’s deplorable status amongst its counterparts, especially when we consider the enormous wealth and revenue enjoyed by the State since 1999 till date. So, who do we really blame for Delta State’s underdevelopment?
Do we blame James Ibori, as the only problem of the State or what?
The recent statistics of Federal Allocation showed that Delta State has received N182.32 billion for just 10 months in 2019, and yet most of the State's roads are bad, and basic infrastructural projects are nowhere to be found in the State.
Truth is, it was Ibori who started the carefree looting of public funds in Delta State, which landed him in a UK prison. As expected, others have followed Ibori's footsteps in this regard. They have all taken after Ibori, who is their master in carefree looting which started since 1999 till date. Evidently, the leadership in Delta State is Ibori's dynasty which is being inherited from one political godson to another, amongst the political crown princes of the State, which depends on the one that is anointed the crown prince to take charge.
Be that as it may, the blame should go to the Delta State elites and the masses who have allowed a convicted person to rule them as ZOMBIES, and they do not see anything wrong for a convicted James Ibori to lead them. They go to him to take 'blessings' before taking a decision on whom to be elected or appointed in different levels of Government in the State. All we can say is: shame on Delta State elites and some of the masses who blindly follow a convicted thief like Ibori who was confirmed a thief by the UK court. They call him the "odidigboigbo of Africa" because he owns the Delta State’s political dynasty. Great Ovedje Ogboru is obviously not a crown prince of Ibori's dynasty, hence the gang up against him. Even within the PDP, one must be a crown prince of the Ibori's dynasty, if not, there will be a gang up against that PDP member aspiring to be elected or to be appointed.
Many of my critics have said Zik Gbemre has no right to blame the ignorant people for allowing themselves to be led by a convicted man who was jailed for stealing their own money. But Ibori's dynasty didn't force them to choose him as their leader and hero. A friend told me a few days ago that I should turn a blind eye on Ibori and his Delta State’s political dynasty, and that it is right for the people to follow a thief as far it is their right.
Well, in as much as every person has his/her right for freedom of association, but it is morally wrong for people to form Association of looting public money, which in turn causes poverty and hardships for the people. How do we really develop Nigeria with this mindset of "he is our brother". Nigerian leaders and elites go for medical checks in advanced countries but I doubt if the citizens of those countries allow care free looting by their leaders. Otherwise, they wouldn't have got the advanced medical facilities they have. Why should the elites and masses complain of bad governance and underdevelopment since they are angry that I am criticising Ibori and his Delta State political dynasty that has held the state since 1999? The Nigerian elites should stop complaining because they encourage the looting of public funds, but yet they condemn the man that is speaking out against the stealing.
A friend called me on this issue, and said that there is nothing wrong for people, including Delta State elites, to praise, commend, and associate with Ibori as an unrepentant convicted thief. And that the Nigerian constitution guarantees Freedom of Association. While I agree with the fact that there is Freedom of Association, but there are also 'associations' that are considered evil and should never be entertained because of what it portends. Are we therefore saying that, just because people have Freedom of Association, they should associate with whomever they please? That means we are saying that every one, regardless of their status in the society, can have and join the 'Association of Armed Robbers', 'Association of Cyber Crime and Fraudsters; etc. We all know that is foolishness and immorality of high proportion, which no sane society would accommodate. It is the same way we see those now associating with the likes of Ibori, who are unrepentant and unremorseful convicted former public office holders.
It is therefore appalling for the elites of a country to think that people should form association of thieves, or form association of armed robbers, or form association of kidnappers. We should not misinterpret the Nigerian constitution on Freedom of Association.
Then another friend, likened my write up on this issue of Ibori, as the cost of hatred. That maybe, I have hatred for Ibori. And my response is that, I don't hate Ibori, but I only hate his actions, and also because I have zero tolerance for Ibori 's UNREPENTANT ATTITUDE, and not showing any sign of being remorseful or sobber over the atrocities he has continued to commit against the State and Deltans. Which is why he is still dictating who to be appointed, and to be elected governor or legislator in Delta State. If Nigerian elites are so ignorant that they see nothing wrong in Ibori dynasty and political rascality in Delta State, then Delta State is doomed. If the Nigerian elites regard Ibori as their mentor and hero then Delta State is really doomed. The UK, France, US, Germany, that we so desire to be like, are what we see here, seen over there? If it were, those countries wouldn't have developed.
The Delta State elites and some of the masses are the problems of Delta State because they have allowed and encourage these stealings. As for me, I will continue to repeat myself on this subject matter, as far as the politicians like Ibori are not remorseful and do not want to repent from stealing public money. They need to fight for the good of all, and stop to justify the evil in the land. They should stop being comfortable with the bad leadership because they say Zik Gbemre is a troublemaker for speaking out. “They say ignorance is a disease”. So, should I say the Delta State elites are ignorant or very stupid!
Zik Gbemre.
