WHEN MANY PERSONS MAKE POLITICS THEIR CAREER, THE LIKES OF DINO MELAYE AND HIS PUBLIC STUNTS OF VAIN GLORY BECOMES THE PREVAILING CUSTOM
When I saw the publication on Vanguard newspaper online with the subject: Dino Melaye Is Not A Fool, written by one Azu Ishiekwene, all I could see was this is another paid writer trying to tactically and diplomatically do some damage control, without outrightly sounding in support of Dino Melaye's recent video stunt on social media via Dele Momodu's Ovation Instagram tv, which showed his audacious lifestyle of luxury. But the truth of the matter is, no well-meaning and sane person will take Dino Melaye serious in every aspect of the realities of life in a country like Nigeria. You cannot be living in such luxury as a supposed public Lawmaker, when the majority of the people you are meant to represent in the Legislature are suffering in penury.
Any person who takes politics as a profession from the onset, will end up be in the same category as Dino Melaye. Sadly, this is the state of virtually all the politicians in Nigeria, and that in itself, is the root and underlining problem of the Nigerian society. As noted by former Anambra State Governor and a well-established businessman, Mr. Peter Obi: "I'll not encourage anyone to join politics as a career. The reason we have many problems in Nigeria is that we have many who have never managed people or created wealth, now managing national resources. It makes people desperate because they have no career to go back to."
This is the same category Dino Melaye falls into. He was in the Senate and tried to contest as governor of Kogi State but failed to become the flagship bearer of his party. And before that, he was a member of the House of Representatives; then before that he was the kingpin of his school’s students’ union; and later, Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Council on Youths, under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, as reiterated by Azu Ishiekwene.
However, without any public known daytime job or an established business, Dino Melaye is a man whose private cars and jewelleries alone, are enough to establish a car manufacturing factory or Assembly plant in his Kogi State. This would provide great employment opportunities for the Nigerian youths in that State. Yet, he prefers to show off his ephemeral goodies online with such grossness and vain glory. Such a man should not be taken seriously by any right thinking Nigerian.
Such persons like Dino, in a few years to come, will be forgotten because there is apparently no worthy legacy he is laying to leave behind. Nigerian Politicians like Dino Melaye should never be taken seriously because they often try to gain some relevance with such public stunts. They think they are enjoying a life of opulence and affluence, but history will not be fair to them when judged in years to come.
For Dino Melaye, he would have been a better comedian than being given any leadership opportunity at any level. He should be advised by his paid writers, followers, supporters and praise singers to take his God-given talent of comedy and use for something else other than public service. Peter Obi statement said it is all about Nigerian politicians. They have nothing to fall back on because right from the onset, they have never created wealth and businesses other than being in government. That is why they are ready to do anything, including the unthinkable, just to remain within the Government space.
Few months ago, a friend told me that one of his neighbours in Effurun near Warri, Delta State, once told him that the only thing he knows how to do is politics. And since the former Delta State Governor and ex-convict, James Ibori appointed him as a Commissioner, he cannot do without politics. This same man is actually a supposed PhD holder who turned to a professional politician. And according to my friend, the said man, who is also the Chairman of their landlord association in their Layout in Effurun, Delta State, made this proclamation with so much joy - as if his life depended on being a politician.
While I do not want to mention his name, but do you think this supposed PHD holder, who is a neighbour of my friend and a Chairman of their Layout in Effurun, is without brain to think for himself? That if elected as a Governor, he may obviously not have anything to offer. In other words, the likes of Dino Melaye are very many in Nigerian politics. These mouthy politicians and their thugs-turned-politicians, are the pathetic caliber of political leaders we have all across Nigeria.
When they supposedly get elected or appointed, the only thing they know how to do is to misappropriate public funds to buy fleets of cars for their motorcade, and establish more government departments to appoint thousands of Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and Special Advisers of one thing or the other. All of which are to consume more national and state resources. At the end of the day, many Nigerians are subjected and thrown into poverty because the collective wealth and resources meant to make life a lot better for the masses, are diverted by these professional politicians.
They think that is the best way to develop a country. But can a country develop without basic infrastructure and economic plans being fully implemented? The situation in Nigeria is simply pathetic.
