THE WRONG SIGNAL OF BURNING POLICE STATIONS AND KILLING POLICE OFFICERS

THE WRONG SIGNAL OF BURNING POLICE STATIONS AND KILLING POLICE OFFICERS

I believe that if any Nigerian police officer is identified as a killer and caught in wrongful acts, then the appropriate actions should be taken against that police officer, regardless of his/her rank and file.

Agreed that the Nigerian Police Force needs to be reformed and properly funded for appropriate policing, but a situation where police officers depend on complainants and suspects to foot their logistic bills to enable them investigate, make arrests and address a case, then it is a bad development that is fueling the bad image of the Nigerian police. A situation where police officers take money from the public either through bail, donations or whatever, to buy office chairs, desks, fuel their vehicles and buy spare parts for their faulty vehicles, it is a bad development that must be reversed. A situation where police officers are not provided with adequate logistic when on transfer is bad. A situation when junior police officers buy their own uniform and shoes is bad. A situation where police officers on transfer sleep in offices is bad.

With all of this, the Nigerian police and its officers as the nation's security institution, are programmed to fail already because they lack all the basic things and funding to function as they should. It is not the responsibility of the Nigerian police to raise funds to build police stations and equip them with furniture.

The main point here is that if the Nigerian police stations are burnt by protesters, and police officers are mobbed to death, it should send signal to the Nigerian Government as a very dangerous development that has the propensity to adversely affect the Nigerian economy. No local and foreign investor would want to invest in a country with such a Police force with the above stated issues and problems. The question of who will enforce the law of the land becomes an issue. Public order and the rule of law are vital security assurance ingredients that naturally attracts investors to any place. The economic consequences are great and damaging if this is not assured and guaranteed by the government of the day.

There can't be "wealth creation" in such a country where police stations are burnt and police officers are killed. The investors/business people will only invest in a country where there is law and order. A situation where the Nigerian police can't arrest a person that commits a crime is a bad signal that suggests that the country is at the verge of being a failed state. The consequences are just severe internationally, as Nigeria will be declared unsafe to invest in or travel to.

It is the Government's statutory duty to provide a conducive atmosphere for businesses to thrive, which will in turn bring about the creation of wealth. If the government of the day should build more offices and equip them with chairs and desks and then employ youths to sit idle and earn salaries, that is not gainful employment. This is not only unsustainable, but will also not improve the economy one bit because the youths employed are not providing any innovative and idea-driven services. The 85% of government departments are just Idle with no visible functions. The local government councils in Nigeria are practically redundant and don't provide any vital service as they should. We can't run a country like that.

A country without basic infrastructure can't be developed. A country without factories can't be developed. A country cannot develop by mere wishful thinking. If there is law and order, and the government of the day at all levels genuinely provide the needed infrastructure (not just on media/paper propaganda with no visible infrastructure), then that is when progress will be made. Development must be real and genuine. There are just too many Idle politicians hanging around government houses/Legislative houses across the country. Public funds that ought to be used to build infrastructure are now used to pay people that are doing nothing.

In summary, the attacks on the Nigerian police and other security operatives are dangerous and a bad signal to the world that Nigeria is not safe for businesses to thrive. The investors/business people will reason that if police stations are burnt and police officers are mobbed and killed, then their investments, safety and well-being are not assured at all.
