THE NEED FOR OBJECTIVITY AND CREDIBILITY IN THE APPOINTMENT OF THE NEXT VC OF DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY, ABRAKA.
With regard to the subject matter, we were reliably informed that there are 15 Applicants vying for the Position of Vice Chancellor, Delta State University, Abraka. And that out of them, 13 are Lecturers within the campus, while the remaining 2 are from outside the institution.
While some of these Lecturers started lecturing in the Institution as far back as 1992 till date, others joined midway. And that some of the criteria to be appointed VC include: applicant must have gotten a PhD (not honourary); must have been a Head of Department (HOD), at one time; must have risen to be an Academic Professor; must have been a Dean of Faculty at one time; must have delivered inaugural lecture, and must have good records and integrity, etc. Of course, most of them may fall into this category, but there is need to further look at all their past academic qualifications.
We are also made to understand that since the beginning of the said University, a woman has never been a VC. We believe this should also be put into consideration during the selection and final appointment of the next VC of the State's University. So as to create some sort of balance, and 'inclusion perspective' in the whole process.
It was noted that the 15 VC applicants will be facing a Panel of Selection on the October 29, 2019. The Panel of Selection are Five, out of which, Three are from the Governing Council, and Two are elected from Senate, and there is also a Chairman. The VC Panel of Selection will then select the Best Three from the 15 shortlisted. And their names will then be sent to the Delta State Governor, who is the VISITOR of the Institution, to make the final pick that will be appointed the next VC of Delta State University, Abraka.
However, there are a lot speculations that the Delta State Governor is going to influence/impose a preferred candidate of his choice as the said next VC. But whatever the case may be, we urge that the best candidate, who has met all the stated criteria, should be chosen/appointed as the VC. There should not be any outside influence or politicizing the said appointment in any way, so as to get a candidate that would be 'acceptable' by all, and also seen to have followed a 'credible process'. We should not allow self-driven interests and politicking to mess things up in our academic institutions.
