SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT ROTIMI AMAECHI'S SIMPLE LIFE
It was quite surprising to learn that Mr Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, led a simple life despite being a Speaker of the River State House of Assembly, Governor and Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Regardless of what may have been written about him, or what has been said about his person, it will shock many to know that Amaechi, with all the opportunity he had in Government space, is said to have only one family house in his home town in Ubima in Ikwerre LGA of Rivers State.
According to people who know Amaechi on a personal level, it was said that his said family house was actually owned by his father, but he was the one that renovated/upgraded it. And that he has no other house anywhere else, including Port-harcourt, apart from his retirement house which was built for him by the Rivers State Government.
Amaechi, who is married to Mrs Judith Amaechi, and they both have 3 children (all boys), is said to worth little to nothing, as all the vehicles he always used are official vehicles. Though, he is said to like very good clothes and dresses fine. This is a man who was Two times Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly and Chairman of Nigeria Speakers; 8 years Governor of Rivers State and 2 Times Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum.
As a Governor, it was said that his main focus were:
1. Education, where he built new and upgraded existing schools, gave scholarships, employed 13,000 teachers in one day, etc.
2. Health infrastructural development, where he commissioned 165 health centers in one month at one time. Built new mega hospitals and upgraded existing ones.
3. Roads, where he was said to have constructed new ones, upgraded existing ones, which included flyovers and bridges.
4. Agriculture, where he was said to have engaged in large scale farming with foreign partnerships, same with fisheries, etc.
5. Monorail, where, sadly, like other of his initiatives, were abandoned by his successor.
It is also on record that Amaechi, as the Governor of Rivers State, he entrusted the entire management of the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency to Shell (SPDC) to manage. The Rivers State Government partnered with Shell to manage the agency, and the first Director General of the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency was Bolaji Ogunseyi. And later, it was Noble Pepple, all of whom were experts in sustainable development and were Shell personnel. All the employments from low to high management and the Board, were appointed by Shell. And the success story was there. Amaechi didn't interfer in any way with the agency's operation until he left as Governor. And I was told immediately Amaechi left the place, the agency became politicised. I still remember I wrote Uduaghan several times to adopt the management style of the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency in DESOPADEC. But he ignored it. Amaechi didn't use the agency to enrich himself or settle politicians. DESOPADEC is an equivalent of the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency.
Amaechi also established Treasury Energy Resources Limited, owned by Rivers State, and had Eddy Wikina of former Shell General Manager Nigerian Content Development, who is an expert in oil & gas, as the Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director of the said oil and gas company owned by Rivers State, and they were given the free hand to compete with other indigenous oil and gas companies. But all of these lofty ideas were uprooted by his successor.
I was also told Amaechi is said to have no foreign account anywhere in the world, and has no personal private car as at of now, apart from official vehicles attached to his office. Right from when he was a student, he was said to be a student activist. And even as a Speaker and Governor, he drove himself for 16 years in Port-Harcourt.
In other words, one would say that Amaechi is not crazy for wealth like most Nigerian politicians of his status are across the country.
I know some of my critics will say Zik Gbemre is supporting Amaechi who was alleged to have stolen much public wealth supposedly here and there. But I for one, will never base my opinion about people merely based on rumours of this and that. I have been victimized countless times, and called all sorts of unprintable names. So, I don't purchase news/stories that are not verifiable and not true, no matter the crowds of people who believe such stories. I am also not interested in any political appointment of any sort in the Nigerian public space at all levels. I am just saying things as I see them, and as they really are from my layman's perspective.
My reliable source told me that Amaechi is willing to confront any person, and has asked the public to come openly to challenge him, if they can trace any account or ill-gotten wealth to his name and his wife/children, anywhere - be it terms of any property owned by him, apart from his father's house he renovated in his village, and the only retirement house built for him in Abuja by the River State State Government. Amaechi is said to have no other property that can be connected to him.
The bottom line is that, If it is really true about all was said about Amaechi, then it is really rare to see this kind of man in Nigeria's political space, considering his political status of rising to the top of the ladder. That is something worth commenting and for other Nigerian politicians to emulate. That is how I see it.
