SHAME ON TAIGA, URHOBO MONARCHS, PGS AS OKOWA HANDPICKED NEW UPU LEADERS
It is most embarrassing that for the lure of the jeeps, cash and sundry gratifications provided by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, immediate past Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) President General (PG), Olorogun Moses Taiga and co executives, turned our most revelled Nigeria's oldest socio-cultural institution into a partisan praise singing tool for Okowa in his shambolic governance of Delta.
It is even more inciting that at his exit as perhaps one of the most shameless UPU PGs ever, Taiga would also allow himself to be used by Okowa to splash stomach infrastructure among Urhobo traditional rulers, local government chairmen, Urhobo appointees to Okowa and Urhobo communities PGs to impose a new UPU President-General (PG) and entire executives handpicked by Okowa.
Under Taiga's watch, UPU became an object of mockery among ethnic groups in Delta state as he overtly ran it as a viable propaganda tool to promote the ruinous Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hegemony over Delta. Even when, as Delta's majority ethnic group, Okowa derided Urhobo with beggarly mediocre appointments and shoddy projects, Taiga, throughout his UPU leadership saw the shameless Delta governor as godsent to Urhobo.
Aside worshipping Okowa, enjoying his jeeps and other appeasements, what meaningful, tangible legacy can Taiga say he left in UPU? He promised an Urhobo University, where is it today? He promised an Urhobo Microfinance Bank. Where is the bank on any Urhobo soil? None anywhere.
And worshipping Okowa till the end, he leads the Delta governor's bankrolling of the stage managed elections to impose a new UPU Exco. Who do we blame for this shame? I am not unaware that government interference in UPU elections didn't start with Okowa. In the days of Chief James Ibori, it did happen, but at least Chief Ibori had Urhobo blood in him. How can Urhobo allow an Ika Igbo man pick UPU Exco?
I state unequivocally that UPU is not under any Urhobo traditional rulers. They could be recognized as ceremonial traditional rulers and not to claim control over a UPU that took the selfless patriotic efforts of the great Mukoro Mowoe, Omorowhovo Okoro,John Okpodu, Jabin Obahor, Samuel Jereton Mariere, Thompson Edogbeji Atkin Salubi, Joseph Arebe Uyo,Thomas Erukeme and other Urhobo patriots who founded UPU.
UPU, founded on 3rd November 1931 in Warri, is Nigeria's oldest socio-cultural organisation. It is time Urhobo traditional rulers, are to stay away from UPU affairs and allow the body perform its roles set up by its founding fathers to project Urhobo cause. Urhobo traditional rulers should remain in their palaces if all they now do is to worship Delta sitting governor for handouts.
The Urhobo traditional rulers have become obstacles of development in Urhobo land. The so-called supposed elected UPU executives, handpicked by Okowa on 3rd December 2022 in Uvwiamuge will not be recognized by any sane Urhobo son, daughter and wives. The new Exco lacks credibility on arrival.
On good authority, it is open secret that vehicles Moses Taiga and his UPU executives are using were given to them by Okowa. And that was enough to compel Taiga to ensure that the partisan Urhobo traditional rulers, Local government chairmen, Okowa SSAs, SAs from Urhobo dominated the delegates that elected the supposed new UPU Exco.
It's such a shame. I don't blame Okowa. Shame of Taiga, Urhobo monarchs, all hands involved in this UPU scam. The result is why you now have a faceless new UPU PG.
A UPU PG should resonate with Urhobo people without any hyped introduction or profile. His personal accomplishments that has projected Urhobo common good should be clear to the Urhobo people just by the mention of his name. Today who do they say we now have as UPU PG? Ese Gam. I don't know anything about him?
