I must say that I am impressed with the recent piece being circulated online by Chief Olu Falae, on the quest for the restructuring of Nigeria.

It is a very wonderful and properly summarized note on the restructuring of Nigeria by Olu Falae. My only problem is that, some of these political leaders had the opportunity to be in the past military administrations for years, and they didn't see anything wrong then with what the military did, neither did they advise their military leaders then because they were all enjoying the fringe benefits that came with those military administrations.

Chief Olu Falae was a prominent member of the then military administration of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida. He was Secretary to the Federal Military Government of Babangida then. In other words, though he wrote very well on the subject matter, but he failed to do some of these things when it was much easier. The Sani Abacha military administration was simply an extension of the Babangida administration through Shonekan. I didn't hear or see Chief Olu Falae then as an anti-military administration activist. In fact, he was part of that era of military leadership that created all of these problems we are now facing today.

Though, Chief Olu Falae was a member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which was a pro-democracy movement, but he was not actively noted like Anthony Enahoro, Abraham Adesanya, Bola Tinubu, Tai Solarin, Alex Ibru, Alfred Rewane, Beko Ransome Kuti, Gani Fawehinmi, Frank Kokori, Ebitu Ukiwe, Mallam Lawal Dambazzau, Adeyinka Adebayo, Dan Suleiman, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Anya O. Anya, Yohanna Madaki, Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu, Ralph Obioha, Sarah Jubril, Mohammed Siraj Hamza, Jonah Jang, Wahab Dosunmu, Empire Kanu, and many others that paid costly prices for daring to challenge the then military regimes of Babaginda and Abacha.

For Alex Ibru, who was appointed Minister of Interior by Abacha, he pulled out of that military government because he disagreed with the military style of Abacha’s leadership. And this made Abacha to go after him and he was wounded severely to the point where he had to be flown out of the country for medical treatment.

Unlike Alex Ibru who disassociated himself from the military rule of Abacha who came with the pretense that he was overthrowing Shenekon to right the wrong, Olu Falae was very much involved in the military government. In my own view, Babangida and Abacha regimes were the same because they were the best of friends, and they planned all the coups together. For Olu Falae to have served under Babangida and didn’t see anything wrong with what he was doing then, is the same as serving under Abacha. The best thing he could have done then was to come out openly to disassociate himself from Babangida and Abacha. Alex Ibru did this, hence he paid the price then.

As Secretary to the then Federal Military Government of Babangida, Olu Falae was part of the Armed Forces Ruling Council, which decides the fate of the nation then. And for Olu Falae to be made Secretary, of that military administration, it meant he was trusted by that Military Government. But he never advised his boss rightly then in addressing some of these things he is talking about today as regards restructuring. Olu Falae was also a minister of Finance in one of the military administrations. So, this is where I am a bit skeptical with what he is saying now about restructuring of Nigeria because while he was active in the Military Government, which was the right opportunity to address this issue, he never did what was expected. However, the points he made in the said write-up are quite in order, if we are to tow the path of having this great nation restructured.
