OUR LOVE AND VALUE FOR MONEY HAS MADE US SLAVES TO IT AS A NIGERIAN SOCIETY

It has been said that the best way to identify the true character, personality and self-worth of a man is when he has access to money and power. It is when people, including those that you think you know very well, have money and power that you know who they truly are. We see this reflect in different shades and levels across every aspect of our Nigerian society.
That is why today, we have become a people who value money (regardless of how it was made by the individuals concerned) more than anything else. As such, the sacred values like humility, hard work, diligence, honesty and integrity that once held our society together, have all been replaced with their opposites. Leaving our societies decaying daily without us even realizing it.
Agreed that money is very important because it addresses a lot of things in the society that we live in today. In other words, money is good, but it is the LOVE OF IT that is the problem. Even the Holy Book notes that: “For the Love of money is a root of ALL KINDS OF EVIL. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pieced themselves with MANY GRIEFS.” This explains the fact that every sort of evil we see all around our society today, can be traced to the love of money.
Recently, someone posted a story of an experience by Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, who was a British statesman, army officer, and writer, and was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, during the Second World War, and again from 1951 to 1955. The said story, and the statement quote by Winston Churchill, practically explains what I am trying to drive home here about the subject of money. According to said post by Winston Churchill: "I took the taxi one day and went to the BBC office for an interview ... and when I arrived, I asked the driver to wait for me for forty minutes until I got back! But the driver apologized and said 'I can't because I have to go home to listen to Winston Churchill's speech' ... Churchill says he was amazed and delighted with this man's desire to listen to his conversation! So, Churchill took Ten Pounds and gave to the taxi driver without telling the driver who he was. When the taxi driver collected the money, he said: "I'LL WAIT HOURS UNTIL YOU COME BACK, SIR! AND LET CHURCHILL GO TO HELL!” Principles have been modified against money. Nations were sold for money; Honor was sold for money; Brothers were sold for money; Families were split for the money; Friends have been separated for the love of money; and People were killed for money! Who gave so much power to money and made people their slaves? So be careful about money...!”
Apparently, man did make money what it is today. But it sad that many have also made that piece of paper called money, to become their masters, and they the slaves of it. And this is because of the paradigm shift of our minds on what we consider valuable in our society. Today, many are ready to do anything, including the unthinkable, just for money. We have become a people whose self-worth and self-esteem is tied to the amount of money in their pockets and bank accounts. As such, this has made many heartless, wicked and without empathy for others. That is why corruption has remained at all-time high in the Nigerian society.
This is also why we have become a people whose life’s worth and self-esteem is tied to those ephemeral things. If we were to strip some persons (especially elites and politicians) all of their ill-gotten money/wealth, Status symbols/Class/Titles/Awards, their self-worth and self-esteem will amount to zero.
The saddest part is that many don’t even realize how their pursuit for money, have created a ripple-effect of evil and wickedness which have also led to the problems we all face today in our society. Many, also do not realize the far-reaching consequences of their actions in their pursuit for money. As you are cheating some persons what is dully theirs because you want to have it all, it creates consequences/repercussions and ripple-effects that you don’t even consider. When the money that is in your possession, and that you have used, and still using to do a lot of things – is gotten by FRAUD. Or is gotten by ‘destroying the lives of people’; that money is blood money. You might say that is not true, and God forbid! But let us look at it.
When a Politician for instance, has grossly looted our collective treasury, you think that it is simply starching away millions of dollars in house/safe somewhere, or putting away one billion in his account? When you realize that, that money is funds that should have been used to build good hospitals and good roads, and now that those good hospitals and good roads were not built – it has led to people dying every day; then you would realize that such money is ‘blood money’, which they are using to pay their children school fees abroad; using to buy/build houses/mansions, and bringing such money to Church as Tithes and offerings. When you are supposed to use the money meant for the Locals, State or Federal Governments to construct roads and basic infrastructure, but instead you carted away such money for you and your clique to share, then you bring some to your Pastor/Bishop/Reverend/Imam, or whatever, and people use those bad roads and die; that money, is called ‘blood money.’ Harsh and shocking wouldn’t you say! But that is the bitter truth, which many never consider. We can see how the love for money is the root of all the evil we see around us, and why we need to be careful and cautious with it.
Even the country as a whole, has been jeopardized and placed in very partial diplomatic ties and relations with other foreign countries because of the wrong choices made by our political leaders, whose love for money and power has so blinded them not to think properly. Our political leaders forget that a country that just keeps receiving money from anybody will ultimately fulfil the agenda of their benefactors. Yet, we see past and present political leaders in Nigeria keep digging this hole of burrowing money which they never really judiciously use in the interest of the masses, or account for such funds. This has left us with governments of retards who do not understand the psychology of reciprocation, hence they will even collect water from the devil and give her citizens the cup to return. In fact, the entire Africa is gradually taking steps to into modern day slavery, all because of the love for money. And the Western powers keep doing anything to ensure we remain incapacitated, and always rely on them for practically everything.
