ON WIKE BLAME ON OBASEKI FOR HONOURING THE OBA OF BENIN INVITATION FOR PEACE PACT

It has always been evident that the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesome Wike, has never been a respecter of the elders and organized institutions. This, we have seen demonstrated by him on several occasions, hence I am not really surprised when reports stated that he blamed his colleague, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, for honouring the invitation of the Benin Monarch on the need for Governorship candidates in the State to maintain peace and tranquility.
In his words: “My friend, what is left in your bank again, what hope do you still have, why will you submit yourself to such mockery and ridiculous invitation” Wike fumes profusely. Wike’s attack on Obaseki for honouring the invitation of the Oba of Benin, and undermining the Oba’s good intensions to broker peace between the two contending candidates for the Edo State September Gubernatorial election, is a testimony that Wike has no respect for elders.
Apart from being a First-Class King in the entire country, the Oba of Benin is older than Wike and has wealth of experience and more educated. Being a Governor does not mean he should talk to elders as he likes, and ridicule their status and intentions. We saw this happen on national television earlier this year, in Rivers State, when the same Governor Nyesom Wike practically mocked, abused the living-day-light of the Traditional Rulers within his jurisdiction. He even pointed to one of the Monarchs while speaking, as he mocked his traditional attire, and how young he was, running around them and going on errands when he (Wike) was still in School.
I am also not surprised that Wike would ridicule the effort of the Benin Monarch who was only trying to ensure that peace and tranquility returns in Edo State because the political atmosphere in the State was at high peach. This is hinged on the fact that elections in Rivers State, where Wike is a principal actor, have always been ridden with violence of high proportions. So, we don’t expect Wike to understand the need for peace and tranquility in an election.
The bottom line is that the Benin Monarch Dynasty is older than the Nigerian Republic, and is well respected across Nigeria and the Western world. As such, Wike should keep silent and stop his abuse and ridicule of the noble actions of the respected Oba of Benin. If he has no respect for Kings/Traditional Rulers in Rivers, he should not extend his disrespect to other States. I also do not think the elders and Traditional rulers should keep silent when politicians are misbehaving and causing breach of the public peace, for sake of power. In a few years, Wike’s tenure will expire as Governor. But the Oba of Benin Monarchy will still remain.
