ON THE WAR BETWEEN OBASEKI AND OSHIOMHOLE
I am surprised to see how most Nigerian elites are easily convinced with the usual rhetorics of Nigerian politicians. And I wonder why they don't think and see things from the whole picture. To start on the subject matter, let me reiterate here that Godwin Obaseki was practically appointed by Adams Oshiomhole as his successor, when the relations between them was smooth. Obaseki was never really elected as the Governor of Edo State. This fact, was indirectly made clear by Obaseki during his inaugural speech as a Governor. In that inaugural speech, Obaseki called Oshiomhole his leader and Mentor, and that it was an honour he will always treasure, for being Oshiomhole's successor. Aside stating that "many of the fundamental socio-economic development in Edo State have been put in place by Oshiomhole", Obaseki also stated then that he will "always respect and honour his trust, confidence and counsel..."
So, to those now be saying Oshiomhole fought godfatherism in Edo State when he campaigned for Godwin Obaseki, whom he single-handedly appointed as the Governor of Edo State, they should be reminded that the mere act of sponsoring and mentoring Obaseki is godfatherism in itself. Oshiomhole was the godfather of Obaseki at that time he crowned him the governor of Edo state. So, people should not be deceived by the words of politicians.
In the game of Nigerian politics, a political mentor to someone is a godfather, period! Oshiomhole merely used that slang of godfatherism to appoint obaseki then. The act itself is godfatherism as a mentor. A mentor is seen as the "DON" or a godfather in Nigerian politics.
In other words, Oshiomhole is a godfather, and he should not be blamed for being that because that is what is obtainable in Nigerian politics. If there should be any blame on any one, that blame should be for the entire people of Edo State, and Godwin Obaseki for requesting to be crowned as the governor of Edo State by Oshiomhole.
Obaseki can't deny this fact that Oshiomhole, is his godfather. He emerged Governor of Edo State through godfatherism. He was made by Oshiomhole. However, the point here is that Obaseki should not bite the fingers that has fed him. Obaseki must have accepted some terms and conditions, hence he was appointed by Oshiomhole. But he should not bite what he does not want to swallow. Oshiomhole on the other hand, enjoyed the role of his godfatherism when the going was good.
The fact is that, the moment one has requested for the bitter meal and you willingly bite it and swallow it, then one must not complain about it. There should not be justification to bite and swallow the bitter food and later say it was bitter. Desperation for power has prompted many Nigerian politicians to grab power at all cost. There should not be room for unnecessary justification for these kind of greed for power by Nigerian politicians.
Obaseki is resisting him now because he wants to build his own status of godfatherism, and not because Oshiomhole is asking him to share state resources, which he refused. From what I can tell, Obaseki simply wants to be a godfather/DON himself. Nigerian elites have refused to think and analyse these issues from this perspective.
