ON THE REPORTED EVICTION NOTICE TO FULANI HERDSMEN IN OSHIMILI NORTH LGA OF DELTA STATE – THE NEED TO APPLY WISDOM AND CAUTION

With regards to the reported Executive Order from the Oshimili North Local Government Council Chairman evicting Fulani Herdsmen resident in the Local Government Area, which had led to several protests by the said Fulani indigenes, I strongly believe there is need to apply caution and care with this action because it has the propensity to stirrup a reprisal response, and unanticipated crises at both ends of the country.
For one, let us be reminded that we equally have people from the Southern parts of Nigeria who are currently living and doing business in the Northern parts of Nigeria. As such, this action against the said Fulani herdsmen resident in Oshimili North LGA of Delta State, can result in a reprisal action against Southerners in the North, and further deepen the apprehension and rivalry crises between the North and the South, if care is not taken.
More so, the said Executive Order by the Oshimili North LGA Chairman, Mr. Louis Ndokwe, which gave only Seven Days ultimatum to the Fulani herdsmen to evict them from the Local Government Area or have their structures demolished, sounded a bit too harsh and unreasonable. Aside the fact that these people may obviously be living in the said areas for years, the manner with which they are being asked to vacate the area might trigger unanticipated crises. Though, the said Council Chairman noted that they have agreed with the Traditional Rulers, relevant Stakeholders and the people of Oshimili North LGA on this action against the Fulani herdsmen, and one could also reason with him on why the said Executive Order is being taken – which is hinged on the fact that the said Fulani herdsmen prefers to live in the bushes and farms instead of the open towns where everybody else lives. And according to him, it means there is something they are hiding for not willing to live in the towns, which the Council Chairman said they are welcome to do so if they so desire to remain in the Local Government Area.
Let us also bear in mind that the said Ughelli North Local Government Area, is where there have been reported cases of local farmers and women being killed, raped or both, by suspected Fulani herdsmen in recent past. And the truth is, if there were no such recorded cases of killings of local farmers of Uwheru Community of Ughelli North Local Government Area in Delta State, there would not have been such eviction order by the Oshimili North LGA Chairman in the first place. It is evident that the killings of local farmers by suspected Fulani herdsmen must have triggered and instigated the said Chairman to give the eviction notice to the Fulanis in the said area. As such, I think the Federal Government should promptly take more proactive steps to stop these killings of local farmers in Oshimili North Council, Ughelli North Local Government Area, and other places in Delta State. The Federal Government should not wait until the situation gets out of hand before they act. If great countries like the US, which is multicultural/multi-religious faith in all ramifications, and they still live as one nation, then I think we can.
While I am not in support of, and totally against killer herdsmen and the Boko haram sect and their criminal activities in the farm lands of our people in recent times past. But I still believe that evicting/asking people to quit their places of abode within such a short notice of Seven days, is dangerous because nobody is a monopoly of crises or instigating actions that would stir it up. Hence, we should be very careful when dealing with such matters.
I also do not support the recent reported group movements of young persons from one part of the country to another part of the country because of the security situation at the moment and most importantly, because of the ban/restriction on interstate movements across the country to curb the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic. The times that we are currently living in is definitely not the best to allow such group movements of young persons from one part of the country to another. But the reported quit notice within Seven days, will only trigger deep crises and deepen the animosity and distrust amongst the different ethnic groups in the country.
I am from Delta State, and there are many natives of Delta State living in the North West, North East and the North central known as the middle belt. So, we should be very mindful of how we treat others, so that the same fate will not befall of people up there in the North. We should not forget how the Nigerian civil war started, and we need to avoid issues and circumstances that may instigate another civil war in the country. I have said my piece!
