ON THE RE-OPENING OF OSUBI-WARRI AIRSTRIP - THERE IS STILL URGENT NEED TO UPGRADE/EXPAND THE AIRSTRIP TO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT STANDARD

With reports that the Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the reopening of the all-important Osubi-Warri Airstrip, for daylight operations in Visual Flight Rules (VFR) conditions with no night operations, which I consider as a welcome development, however, it is not the only thing that is expected to be done.

Like I have consistently advocated for many years now, there is still the urgent need for the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, and the Minister of Aviation and other relevant authorities concerned, to order for the immediate upgrade and expansion of the said Osubi-Warri Airstrip to a standard International Airport, to accommodate bigger aircrafts to land and take off from the Airport's runway/tarmac like the Lagos and Abuja International Airports. And not just for daylight operations for only smaller aircrafts to take off and land there, as currently approved. The requested upgrade/expansion of the Airstrip to a standard international Airport, would automatically increase the economic commercial value of the said Osubi-Warri Airport, as more airline operators can then channel their commercial flights with bigger aircrafts via the said Airport near the oil city of Warri.

With the established fact that Warri and environs are the most commercially viable economic areas in Delta State, which are also feeding the entire nation's energy sector, it is not proper that the said oil city of Warri and its environs cannot boast of having a standard International Airport that can accommodate bigger aircrafts. This is where the bulk of the wealth of the country is coming from, it deserves a standard and better Airport.

It is not like the Federal Government and relevant Authorities will be doing the people any favors by engaging in this upgrade/expansion project, but it is about doing what is expediently required for the good of the region, and in the economic interest of the entire country.

We therefore appeal to the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government, and the relevant Government Authorities in the nation's Aviation sector, to see this as a necessary step, for the said Osubi-Warri Airstrip to be upgraded and expanded as soon as practicable.

It is only when this is done, that the people of Delta State and the entire Niger Delta region, would know that the Buhari-led Federal Government has established a standard International Airport in Warri and Environs. In other words, it is not to open the Osubi-Warri Airstrip that is the main issue, it is to upgrade/expand its runway/tarmac to a standard international Airport to accommodate bigger aircrafts, and make it fully operational, not just for daylight operations. That is the crux of the matter.
