ON THE INCREASED INSECURITY IN DELTA STATE - NO ONE IS SAFE ANYMORE

December 9, 2020 | News

I was greatly disturbed when I saw reports that armed criminals dressed in military uniform on Tuesday 8th December, 2020, reportedly abducted three teachers from Ohorhe Secondary School in Uvwie LGA of Delta State. The bandits were said to have stormed the school premises in a Highlander Jeep and made their way to the school staff room where they forcefully whisked three teachers away.

ON THE INCREASED INSECURITY IN DELTA STATE - NO ONE IS SAFE ANYMORE

I was greatly disturbed when I saw reports that armed criminals dressed in military uniform on Tuesday 8th December, 2020, reportedly abducted three teachers from Ohorhe Secondary School in Uvwie LGA of Delta State. The bandits were said to have stormed the school premises in a Highlander Jeep and made their way to the school staff room where they forcefully whisked three teachers away.

This to me, is a great cause for concern and alarm because it invariably means that no one is safe anymore in Delta State because even teachers, that are poorly paid, have now become targets of goons/kidnappers.

It is no longer the rich people that are the targets of these criminals, but any person they see is now their target. It was even gathered that the gunmen had parked in the school premises for over 15 minutes before carrying out their criminal action. And as expected, the school management had thought that the gunmen were real military personnel since they were dressed in their uniform.

We can see the level of desperation and the extent these criminals are ready to go just to carry out their criminal actions. The question is, what is the Delta State Government and relevant Security Operatives doing at the moment to arrest this increasing insecurity in Delta State? Is this how Deltans and Nigerians in the State going to be living in fear and apprehension during this yuletide season? When the ordinary people are no longer safe and secured in their places of abode, then there is serious trouble in the land. We simply cannot continue like this!

Just on Sunday December 6th,2020, in Otu-Jeremi in Ughelli South LGA of Delta State, during a marriage ceremony, I was told of Community vigilantes going about with guns and shooting into the air as if they were in a war front. That means, the insecurity situation is so bad that the locals in Delta State have to rely on amateur and inexperienced Community vigilantes to provide security for them. This situation is very dangerous and not a good development in the State. Those local Community vigilantes are not trained to handle guns, as such, it makes them dangerous. The situation is just getting out of hand even as I write this. Instead of asking the Police to provide security, the locals now approach Community vigilantes for security. What a shame!

While I urge that all measures and efforts should be put in place by the relevant Security Operatives to ensure that the said abducted teachers are rescued soonest, I also ask that more aggressive efforts should be strategically put in place for the people in the State to be assured of being safe in their environment. The Delta State Government should give the Police and Security Operatives ALL THE NEEDED SUPPORT for them to be up and doing in ensuring security in the STATE. Let this issue be given all the prompt attention it deserves and not treated with kid gloves.
