ON THE HONOUR BESTOWED ON OSADEBEY WITH VARSITY IN DELTA STATE - THE NEED FOR THE DELTA GOVERNMENT TO ALSO NAME THE DELTA UNIVERSITY AFTER OLOROGUN FELIX IBRU AS THE FIRST EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF DELTA STATE

With reports that the Delta State Government has established the Dennis Osadebey University, Asaba, in honour of the late Premier of the defunct Midwest Region, which followed the upgrade of the Anwain campus of the Delta State University to an autonomous degree awarding institution, I believe there is also need for the Delta State Government to also honour the memory of Olorogun Felix Ibru in like manner, as the first elected Governor of Delta State.

While the honour given to Osadebey, as the premier of the Midwest region is a welcome development, but I really do not understand why has Governor Ifeanyi Okowa deliberately refused to name the Delta State University after Olorogun Felix Ibru, as the first elected Governor of Delta State? Yet, he has established this new State University as a degree awarding institution of its own.

I have consistently asked Governor Okowa, immediately after the death of Felix Ibru, to do this, and I have written him Six letters and countless official text messages, on this same request, which I believe is worth considering, but he has ignored all of it. It is appalling to note that Governor Okowa served under Felix Ibru when he was Governor. But he has refused to do this simple Honourable gesture in honour of this statesman.

By maintaining this stand, Governor Okowa has shown to everyone that he is a tribalist. And this is really bad.

The Urhobo leaders, led by the likes of Dr. Esiri, Okumagbas, Ejoor, and the Ibrus, the Isoko leaders led Paul Omu, the Ijaw leaders led by Chief E. K. Clark, the Ukwuane, the Itsekiri leaders of thoughts led by Ayomike, Jemide, and other prominent sons and daughters of the these tribes, had all fought hard for the creation and birth of Delta State. But today, it is being hijacked by the Anoima people who were not originally in the picture of those that requested for the creation of Delta State.

Sadly, it is as if Power and Money has blinded our own people from raising their voices against this anomaly and talking - apparently for fear of being victimized by Governor Okowa in his administration.

They all should be reminded that Delta State is not owned by Governor Okowa and his own Anioma people. The Urhobos, Isokos, Itsekiris, Ijaws and Ukwuane tribes requested for the creation of Delta State. But unfortunately the capital was stolen to Asaba with the aid of their inlaw, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (Rtd).

I also find it inappropriate, unfair and not good enough, that all that the Delta State Government under Okowa could do was to have the Delta State Secretariat Complex in Asaba, and Senate building of the Delta State University, Abraka, named after Felix Ibru. And like I have asked before, why name just a building in the Delta State University after Felix Ibru instead of naming the whole Institution after him? For someone who had established the said University, and was also the First elected Executive Governor of Delta State, Olorogun Felix Ibru deserves nothing less than having his name and legacy immortalized by naming the entire Delta State University after him.

I once again make this call, and ask that the right thing should be done. This would be one of the best gifts the Delta State Government would give the Ibrus and Deltans.
