ON THE HIGHLY CONDEMNABLE ATTACK ON UMUTU POLICE STATION IN DELTA STATE, AND OTHERS IN NIGERIA
It is with great displeasure that I condemn the recent attack on Umutu Police station in Ndokwa West LGA of Delta State, which was repelled by the Police Officers on duty.
While I appreciate the fact that, due to proactive measures already put in place by the Delta State Commissioner of Police, the said attackers were faced with stiff resistance by the men on duty, as the policemen on duty gave them a tough fight. Though, two policemen were killed during the exchange of gunfire, as one ASP died out of High Blood Pressure in the hospital, but two of the armed bandits were gunned down while others injured. However, I also find it quite disturbing, and a major source of concern, that unknown gunmen have now come up with this ugly trend of attacking Police Stations, which has continued particularly in the South-South and South-East regions for some time.
This calls for concerted efforts by the Political leaders to do what that is required in supporting the Police and Security Operatives, to promptly stop this ugly trend of criminality. No sane investor will invest his resources in a place where attacks on the Police have become frequent and unrestrained. Same with the criminal acts of kidnapping, killings by supposed Fulani herdsmen, Boko haram insurgents. If the Police Stations, especially those in the Southern parts of Nigeria, have now become targets of attack by these criminal elements, then we are indeed in a crises situation that urgently needs a different approach in addressing this problem.
This is because no one would want to risk his or her investments in such areas where these unexplained attacks by unknown gunmen have become a daily incident. The government at all levels are part of the problem here, and should be held responsible because often times, these goons are encouraged by the politicians, who sometimes appoint them as their Personal Aides, Senior Personal Assistants (SSAs) and what have you, with all kinds of names that are given to them.
Whatever the case may be, the bottom line is that there is need for more proactive measures to be taken by both the Government in their required support to Security Operatives, and the Police officers themselves in fighting this ugly insecurity trend across the country. Preventive measures have to be put in place to stop these goons on this criminality.
