ON THE CONSTRUCTED BRIDGE BETWEEN OVWOR AND EFFURUN-OTOR TOWN IN UGHELLI SOUTH LGA OF DELTA STATE - WHO IS TO BE BLAMED FOR THIS SHAME?

We are certain if Deltans and Nigerians in Delta State could muster the courage to publicly shame and even stone some Executive Officials of the Delta State Government, we are very sure that these supposedly elected and appointed public office holders in the State would not have the guts, audacity and impetus to be doing some of the absurd and disheartening things that they do against the public’s interest with reckless abandon and impunity. If they know that they could be stoned and shamed/disgraced in public, they will think twice before they do anything that will not be in the overall interest of the masses.

I am sure some of us must have seen the picture circulated online showing the supposedly newly constructed bridge between Ovwor Town and Effurun-Otor Town in Ughelli South LGA of Delta State, said to have been constructed by John Oguma’s company, and was commissioned by the Edo State Governor, Obaseki.

One look at the said badly constructed bridge, makes one to wonder why would anyone waste tax payer’s money of the Delta State Government, to execute such a poorly constructed bridge? Can the said bridge even last for a decade before it will collapse and endanger the lives of the people? Do those responsible for constructing the said bridge have conscience at all? Are they suggesting that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa did not send experts from the Ministry of Works to supervise the construction of the said Effurun-Otor/Ovwor bridge in in Ughelli South LGA?

It is being alleged that letters were written by concerned citizens to Governor Okowa to draw his attention to the said badly constructed bridge. But he ignored their complaints, and it has been so as at the time of writing this piece. What is even more appalling is the fact that Ovwor Town is John Oguma’s home Town in Ughelli South LGA of Delta State. And John Oguma is the Chief Contractor of Governor Okowa in the entire Delta Central areas of Delta State.

If it true that the Governor's attention was drawn to this issue, and yet he paid Oguma fully, who went ahead to commission the said bridge, then it then means that John Oguma is being used to do these sorts of poorly executed/constructed projects all across Delta Central in Delta State. But why should a Government be executing public projects without putting measures in place to ensure the value for money is guaranteed? Why waste public funds to execute projects that will not stand the test of time? Or is this a strategy of the Government to keep awarding and re-awarding the same set of several projects across the State every couple of years? Whatever the case may be, this is not good at all, and should be condemned by all well-meaning stakeholders.

This reminds us of our post of Facebook few years ago, about how Sen. James Ebiowou Manager was struggling on Okada (commercial motorcycle), on 21st October, 2017, trying to get to his home town in Bomadi LGA of Delta State. This is the same Senator James Manager who has been in the Senate since 2003, and was a former Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport (1999-2003); and many other positions in the corridors of government. As such, we can say he has all the powers/connections/clout to bring both the State and the Federal Government might to fix, not only the said particular road/bridge he was struggling to cross over in an Okada, but also every other bad or non-existing basic infrastructure in his community to alleviate the sufferings of his people. But that has not been seen in all these years, and it appears it will never be.

When the only thing the common man would have benefitted from these politicians are not done at all or badly executed by them, then there is obviously no hope for a better tomorrow. But it is high time the people should stop taking this rubbish from their political leaders in Delta State. They cannot try some of the nonsense they do here in other climes, and go scot free. Who should we blame in all of this? Do we blame these obviously shameless politicians in power for the deplorable state of basic infrastructure in their constituencies and State? Or should we blame their kinsmen/tribesmen for not owing up to condemn and expose their political leaders for not being accountable and doing what is expected of them?
