ON PDP PLANNED STATE CONGRESS AMIDST FEARS OF THE CORONAVIRUS - THE DELTA STATE OKOWA-LED GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT ACT-SO FOOLISHLY

I find it appalling and a complete disregard of the public's safety and protection, that in spite of the growing anxiety over the spread of the Coronavirus in Nigeria, otherwise known as COVID-19, the Delta State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it’s going ahead with its so-called planned State Congress billed for Tuesday, March 24, 2020, in Asaba, the State capital. What could be more so reckless and unbecoming of public officials, to consider 'politics' more important than the safety and protection of public health and wellbeing?
Aside the fact that Delta State Government under Governor Ifeanyi Okowa should be seen to be 'responsible' and leading by example in the face of a growing pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus, are they also not aware that the Federal Government has announced the reduction in public gatherings following the spread of the disease, where Nigeria has recorded 36 cases as at on Monday, March 23.2020? Are they not aware of the rapid way the said virus has been spreading in the last few days?
Only unreasonable and selfish persons would schedule such a political gathering/public event as such a time as this, to endanger the lives of not only those concerned in the said congress but also the entire public - all because of their thirst and selfish political ambitions.
I am not a politician, neither am I a member of, or affiliated to any political party in the State and in the country, but I will not be humane to sit down and be quiet over this action, that is nothing short of a “chemical time bomb” waiting to happen tomorrow. Though some stalwarts of the PDP party have condemned the decision of the leadership of the party to continue with the congress despite a government directive to reduce public gathering as parts of measures to curtail the spread of the disease, but the question is, what is the Delta State Governor doing about this? Is he going to allow this so-called congress to take place? What is so important about the said congress that cannot wait in a couple of weeks? Are they not aware of the global happenings, and the life-threating situation caused by the coronavirus? What exactly is wrong with these politicians in Delta State? Are they under a curse?
I strongly appeal to the Delta State Governor to not allow his PDP party to endanger the lives of many and Deltans, with their selfish political gathering. Self-restriction and self-discipline should be seen to be practiced/exhibited by Nigerian political leaders right now more than ever. This threat to public health, should not be allowed to hold. Simple!
