ON MRS. OKOWA AND THE DELTA STATE GOVERNMENT MISPLACEMENT OF PRIORITIES

We find it appalling to see how the Delta State Tax Payers money are being wasted by Dame Edith Okowa, the wife of the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, on September 25, 2019 in New York with her large entourage, in the name of talking about breast cancer and being part of those that accompanied President Muhammadu Buhari to the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York, USA. One begins to wonder what exactly has Okowa’s wife has to say or do about healthcare awareness in a well-developed society like the city of New York in US, which they advanced people there have not heard of before? The said jamboree trip to the US, is nothing short of another ‘avenue’ and ‘opportunity’ by the wife of the Delta State Governor and her appendages/tentacles in Delta Government, to launder, misappropriate and waste our collective wealth in Delta State. And it is really painful and shameful!
Instead of Dame Edith Okowa and her retinue of entourage to go to rural areas of Delta State, or public market places like Igbudu Market, Okere Market or Polokor Market to speak and educate our village woman by creating the awareness on breast cancer, or better still seek to develop a breast cancer center in the rural areas, she and her Delta State Government officials prefers to travel to the civilized world of New York to talk about breast cancer and other healthcare awareness? By that action, Mrs. Okowa is simply telling us and the whole world that she has no focus, and senseless in her so-called awareness campaign.
Are they not aware, or do they need to be reminded that the US has gone very far ahead in the advancement of healthcare and its provision/accessibility to US citizens? Should they be reminded that the US has the state-of-arts medical care and health awareness amongst its populace? Like the Rush Hospital East Tower in Chicago which was built in 2011. Do they know how much the US make in that hospital, $3.79 billion? We can see how basic infrastructure can fuel and improve the economy of a nation. They spent $654m and now they are making over $3billion, and we are sure some Nigerian big wigs and government officials go there to pay big money to get treated for terminal sicknesses like cancer, as they have a Cancer Center there. That hospital alone in the US has 8,436 employees as of 2013, employs 1,789 Doctors and 1,366 Nurses. We can see that our people would have nice jobs today in Delta State if the PDP-led Delta State Government and their appendages would use all the funds they have been wasting on frivolities and useless/senseless trips, for such vital infrastructure. There is also the Texas Children’s Hospital - Pavilion for Women, that was built with between 2007-2012.
Then we now come to Delta State, what state-of-the-art healthcare facility or Cancer Center can Dame Edith Okowa and the Delta State Government point out to say “this is what they have been able to provide with State’s resources to improve the health of Deltans? Absolutely none! Even the General Hospitals in the State are in complete shambles. This makes one wonder how will the Delta State Government be funding such a medical campaign trip for Mrs. Okowa and her entourage to the US? Whereas, Delta State as a whole has no medical care facility they can boast of? Is that not misplacement of priorities of the highest order by a supposed State Government?
Is it not shame enough that there is no standard medical hospital in the entire Delta State? And that most of our rural dwellers are dying daily due to the absence of medical care accessibility and medical awareness. How then is the US the proper place for Mrs. Okowa to spend public money to carry out a so-called health awareness? The US already has good medical care and awareness. So, why go there for this so-called campaign project? This makes the whole trip laden with suspicious and clandestine activities that are not in the interest of Deltans.
It is really painful and annoying to see how Nigerian politicians and their wives exhibit a disposition that has no care or mindful of the deplorable plight and sufferings of the locals. The misappropriated public wealth has blinded majority of Nigerian political leaders to act foolishly. Even if Governor Okowa has been goofing across all angles, it is the wife who ought to advise him to govern right. Mrs. Okowa is the closest person to her husband - Okowa. This again is evidence of the fact that indeed, we have in our hands a visionless and clueless Government in Delta State that really do not know exactly what it means to ‘serve’ the people. Mrs. Okowa is just the one we know right now. However, most of the wives of the Nigerian governors and other public officials are like that. The Office of the First Lady has been bastardly abused by Nigerian politicians and their wives, and it is really sad.
