ON ARCH BISHOP KUKAH'S NEW APPOINTMENT - THE WAY I SEE IT

With recent reports that Pope Francis has appointed the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, our dear Bishop Matthew Kukah, as a member of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Human Integral Development at the Vatican City in Rome, the first thoughts that came to my mind was that, this is like the new appointment to the Vatican City that will take him off the trouble waters of the current administration of Nigeria, and its supporters.

However, considering the fact that Bishop Kukah has been a strong thorn in the flesh of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration for some time now, and who has demonstrated the courage and fearlessness in speaking against the misgovernance and nepotism activities committed by the present Federal Government, I believe that we still need his presence in Nigeria for now. As such, the new job/appointment he is being taken to do, can actually still be done by him, as the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, from Nigerian soil. In other words, he could work from Nigeria and do most of his work online via tele/video conference, if they really want him to work from Nigeria. He can still hold meetings from Nigeria with his colleagues in the Vatican City. In the decaying world that we live in, we need religious leaders that are not afraid to speak the Truth, no matter who or what is involved.

I still remember during the dreaded years of the military era of Gen. Sani Abacha, one of the greatest critics then was Archbishop Anthony Olubunmi Okogie, a Nigerian Cardinal Priest and formerly Archbishop Emeritus of Lagos in the Roman Catholic Church. The Catholic Priests, especially those in Nigeria, have been known to be the most fearless and courageous set of religious leaders who are always bold to speak their minds as regards the things that are going wrong in our society Nigeria. And they always damn the consequences, without fear or favour.

I hope other religious leaders like the ones in the Pentecostal Churches, would emulate this path being demonstrated by the Catholic Priests. The Catholic Priests are not selective on who to criticize. Though, I am not a Catholic, but I admire the boldness and courage often demonstrated by their Priests like Arch Bishop Kukah, Rev. Father George Ehusani, just to mention a few.
