NIGERIAN YOUTHS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN IN POWER - BUT THEY END-UP BEING OLD IN POWER

The truth is, the Nigerian youths have always been in power right from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and till now. The youths joined the British colonial masters to rule Nigeria. The likes of Okotie-Eboh, Awolowo, Tafawa Balewa, Anthony Enahoro, Michael Okpara, Ladoke Akintola, Dennis Osadebay, Adegoke Adelabu, Jereton Mariere, Francis Akanu Ibiam, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ahmadu Bello, Kingsley Mbadiwe, Aguiyi Ironsi, David Ejoor, Usman Katsina, Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, Mobolaji Johnson, Yakubu Gowon, Murtala Mohammed, Olusegun Obasanjo, Shehu Shagari, Amuni Kano, Muhammadu Buhari, Badamosi Babangida, Sani Abacha, James Ibori, Amaechi, Bukola Saraki, Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Tunde Fashola, Ben Ayade, El-Rufai, Salisu Buhari, Ghali Umar N'abba and all of them who were past and current Nigerian leaders at the States, National legislature and federal levels were youths when they joined government - either as military or civilian administrators/legislators.

The problem is that when the politicians joined as youths they became glued to power all through their lifetimes and as they are aging they won't leave the government to give room for the younger generation to come in. It is the same all over the world. They even hand over to their sons, relatives. I may ask what is Joe Biden going to do as US President at his age? Is he the best person to contest with Donald Trump? Bill Clinton was US President for 8 years and his wife was the first lady for 8 years. Hilary Clinton became Secretary of State under the Obama led administration. After this, she contested with Trump and lost.

According to Trump, the majority of US politicians have been feeding on the US Government all through their lifetimes, and that they never created wealth for the nation but only to be consuming the US public money. Have a look at the US Senate and Congress and you will see that majority of them have been there for donkey years. Back in Nigeria, once a person is appointed/elected he/she will never leave the seat of power again. They will rotate themselves, their relatives, and fronts.

The fact is that young people have always dominated the Government. But as they join the Government, they will never quit. These are the ones who have made politics a career rather than a place where you are just meant to SERVE for a time and quite honorably. They keep going around and circulating themselves in Government as one thing or the other. The youths have always been given the privileges to be elected/appointed, but once they are in, they don't leave again. What we should be asking for is A CHANGE OF MINDSET AND ATTITUDE TOWARDS GOVERNANCE, and the expected roles in government so that they should quit for others to join instead of rotating themselves.

While I support the Nigerian youths to be given leadership positions across the country, I would have implored that they should quit after service, rather than rotate themselves in power throughout their lifetimes. That is the only thing that will make them different from the old Nigerian politicians who joined government as youths, but are still there till tomorrow, calling the shots.
