NIGERIAN CUSTOMS ASSUMING TOO MUCH POWERS

The Nigerian Customs Service should concentrate energy at the nation's borders, land, sea ports and the international cargo airports in its fight against smuggling.

The service is assuming extrajudicial powers visiting governors of states who don't have hands or say on exit/entry points in the country.

I don't know the collaboration/partnership the Comptroller General of customs wants state governors to build with the customs.

When has fighting smuggling of goods become the responsibility of state governors. I don't know what the Nigerian customs would be doing occupying Nigerian highways, markets and domestic airports?

Every good passes through the Nigerian porous land borders and sea ports and cargo airports. Same customs allow these goods in through exit/entry points in the country and then go to mount checkpoints to collect tolls on victims moving good on roads connecting cities and markets.

Who allow these goods into the country in the first instance? Is it not senseless for customs to be seen on Nigerian roads chasing poor traders, even those who may have bought from smugglers.

Who collects money from smugglers at the entry and exit points including the land borders, sea ports and cargo airports before the goods enter Nigeria? Why harassing petty traders in Nigerian roads after they (Customs) have collected bribes from smugglers at the entry/exit points.

I don't want to assume the Nigerian customs authority doesn't know its roles. The customs boss should stop parading offices and concentrate at the borders and all entry/exit points of the country.

The Comptroller General, his officers have no duty on Nigerian roads, local airports and markets. If his men are working, no smuggled goods will enter Nigeria.
