NIGEL FARAGE – A GOOD EXAMPLE OF A PATRIOTIC PARLIAMENTARIAN NIGERIAN LAWMAKERS SHOULD EMULATE

Every time I consider the Brexit situation, I feel well and encouraged to watch this man, Mr. Nigel Farage, the President of the United Kingdom Independent Party – UKIP, speak in the interest of his country the UK, with a genuine heart and desire to defend the UK’s economic and socio-political interests with his soul and entire being. This is a man who has demonstrated beyond any reasonable doubt, of his undying love for his country. I greatly admire with trepidation, such demonstration of ‘Patriotism’, dedication, discipline and persistency on a just CAUSE by public office holders, be they in any country or continent. Nigel Farage is the league of the likes of UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson and US President, Donald Trump. These men, constantly show us what should be expected of public office holders who are elected to ‘serve’ the people and the interests of their nations, nothing else.
This is unlike what we see and find with our Nigerian public office holders, especially the Nigerian parliamentarians/legislators since we are looking at one of their counterparts in the UK. For the 90.95 % of our Nigerian lawmakers, especially those from the last decade till date, they belong to the league of parliamentarians who only aspired to the legislature to stockpile their private pockets and stomach with collected unaccounted constituency projects, outrageous and highly-inflated salaries and allowances, and other clandestinely orchestrated inflated contracts executed with fronts and what have you. This is why we would continue to identify and highlight some of the speeches, actions and dispositions of other public office holders like them, in developed countries, with the hope and prayer that they would learn a thing or two, when it comes to patriotism and the discharge of their statutory duties in the interests of all Nigerians.
Each time I listen to Nigel Farage speeches, or read his comments/speeches, especially at the EU Parliament, which he represented the UKIP for 27 years, I am inspired greatly to be MORE PATRIOTIC. And I feel the need to also preach the gospel of Nigerian Patriotism to every Nigerian, particularly those who were elected/appointed at all levels of Government. Nigel Farage represented his country under the platform of UKIP in the European Union. He stressed that the UK must be governed by the UK laws, and not the European Union laws, since UK is a sovereign State/Country. He and his UK co-representatives, did not mind that they were losing their highly respected seats at the EU Parliament. He said that the Brexit becoming a reality, marks the end of his political career. And I cannot help but ask myself: When will Nigerian political leaders genuinely serve their country with such selfless dedication and commitment?  Perhaps, they should listen to, and read about Nigel Farage’s role in achieving the Brexit for it is worth emulating.
While there are many areas and speeches of Nigel Farage, which we can highlight here, but I decided to focus on his dramatic speech at the European Parliament ahead of the Brexit vote. Some of the highlights of the speech, clearly demonstrates how parliamentarians, who are meant to represent the interest the people that voted them in, should think and act, when it comes to following a worthy cause that would benefit the masses and not some selected few – like we see being done in the Nigerian National Assembly and State Assemblies.
In one of the said videos on online, when Nigel Farage was given the floor to speak, he started with: “So, this is it. The final chapter. The end of the road. A 47-year political experiment. But the British, finally have been very happy… My mother and Father signed up to a common market; not to a political union, not to flags, anthems, presidents, and now, you even want your own army. To me, it’s been 27 years of campaigning, and over 20 years, here in this parliament. I’m not particularly happy with the agreement. We’ve been asked to vote…but, Boris has been remarkably bold in the last few months, and… he’s made it clear; he’s promised us – there’ll be no level playing field. And on that basis, I wish him every success in the next round of negotiations. I really do! But the most significant point in this, what happened at 11pm this Friday 24th of January 2020, marks the point of no return.
“Once we’ve left, we are never coming back. We would be gone. And that should be the summit of my own political ambitions. I walked in here, as I said before, you all thought it was terribly funny that you stopped laughing in 2016. But my view has changed of Europe, since I joined. In 2005, I saw the Constitution that has just been drafted by others. I saw it rejected by the French in a referendum. I saw it rejected by the Dutch in a referendum. And I saw you, in this institution, ignore them. And boast you could ram it through without their referendums. Well, the Irish did have a vote, and did say no! And were forced to vote again. But what we proved is, the British are too big to bully, thank goodness. So, I became an outright opponent of the entire European Project. I want Brexit to start a debate across the rest of Europe. What do we want from Europe? We want trade, friendship, cooperation, reciprocity. We don’t need a European Commission. We don’t need a European Accord. We don’t need these Institutions and all of its power. And I can promise you, both UKIP and indeed, in the Brexit party – we love Europe, we just hate the European Union.
“It is as simple as that. So, I’m hoping this begins the end of this project. It’s a bad project. It’s not just undemocratic, it is anti-democratic…It gives people power without accountability. People cannot be held to account by the electorates. And that is not an acceptable structure. Indeed, there is a historic battle going on now across the West. In Europe, America and elsewhere – its globalism, against popularism. And you may loath popularism. But I tell you a funny thing – it is becoming very popular. And it has great benefits. No more financial contributions; no more European court of justice; no more being talked-down to; no more being bullied; no more… I mean what’s not to like. I know you’re going to miss us. I know you want to ban our national flags. But we are going to wave you goodbye. And we look forward, in the future, toward working with you, as a sovereign nation…”
Nigel Farage is not the only one who is optimistic about the Brexit move. Recently, Tory MP Iain Duncan Smith reacted as well to the EU's Brexit negotiating strategy document. Ducan Smith noted why the EU is panicking, due to the fact that many of their economies are struggling and becoming the "sick man of the world". The Tory MP also delves into the upcoming negotiations urging the UK to retain fishing rights and the right to make her own laws. In his words: “Europe is in a panic now. Because they have suddenly realized that Britain going is an enormous deal, and they try to pretend that it is not. But it is an enormous problem for them. And so now, what they are doing is panicking over what, and how competitive the UK will become. And we will become incredibly competitive compared to the European Union. Which boils down to all the rules, the regulations, the bureaucracy – we going to break free from all of that. We are going to have our own rules, regulations, laws on our fishing waters, on our borders. All these things are really important. So, we are very clear that we are not going to accept their negotiating positions because these negotiating positions is all about tying us down so that we can’t compete. But are we going to say, we are sorry, we are not going to do that…”
Without a doubt, listening to these Brits, we would realize that indeed, they are voted by the people to make progressive impacts towards the development of their country. And they are committed to that cause in government at any level they are voted in, or appointed to serve. They know what they want, and how to go about getting it done in the interest of their people. It is this trait, and disposition, that we are daily hoping to see being exhibited by our current crop of Nigerian Political leaders across all levels of Government.
