MY VIEWS ON OSHIOMHOLE AND OBASEKI'S DISAGREEMENTS AND THE STATE OF THE NATION

One would say that the economic crisis of Nigeria started when Babangida/Abacha introduced mass scale looting in the country during their military administrations. There was a restriction of public looting for the first tenure and second tenure of Obasanjo and Yar'dua, until Jonathan came in and opened the flood gate for free-for-all looting with reckless abandon and impunity, which has continued till now. The same useless leaders are still being referred to as Saints.

The election results manipulation were perfected by the PDP. Have you seen or heard of any opposition Local Government Council Chairman/ward Councilor in any State of Nigeria since 1999? Of course, none. Are these caused by the APC led government of Buhari? The foundation was laid by the PDP in their 16years reign at the Federal level, which the APC has now continued. In Delta state alone, the mass scale rigging of election is done by the PDP, and not the APC. If we are not sincere and frank, we will not say it the way it is.

When you keep one thousand naira and you keep taking one hundred naira out of it for ten days without adding anything back, then it will get finished. That is the situation we are now in. As for the Edo State election, I think Obaseki will lose because it has become a tradition that the ruling party at the Federal level takes it all, unless reversed by the court/judiciary. But right now, the courts/judiciary have joined in the nonsense because they make huge money from election petition matters. Did Obaseki win any gubernatorial election in Edo state? I really don't think so. He failed, and was imposed on the Edo state people by his godfather, Adams Oshiomhole. Now the game has changed, and Ize-Iyamu who was shortchanged earlier, is now the new crown prince of the mentor, Oshiomhole. Obaseki proclaimed Oshiomhole as his mentor then, and also the mentor of some of them in Edo state politics. He even said, during his inauguration speech, that he would follow the solid foundation laid by his mentor, Oshiomhole. So, why is he complaining now?

Oshiomhole didn’t fight against godfatherism in Edo state but he even promoted godfatherism. The act of Osiomhole, singlehandedly annointing/appointing Obaseki as the governor of Edo state, is godfatherism. I asked a friend the difference between a godfather and a mentor but he couldn't give a satisfactory answer. Your mentor is your role model/godfather. Nobody placed a gun on Obaseki's head to accept to be annointed and appointed by his mentor, Oshiomhole. The Nigerian elites are just too desperate.

I have said it several times that if Zik Gbemre is appointed the Chief of Staff to President Buhari, or Governor Okowa, I will not accept it. I will not accept even being the Secretary to the Federal Government of Nigeria or Delta State government. I will not accept any government role at the moment. At my age, I will not accept any government appointment at both the State and Federal levels.

A situation where every Nigerian elite wants to be in government in Nigeria is dangerous. The deep problems we find all around this country were manufactured by the PDP, and it has affected all aspects of the Nigerian sectors. Nigerian elites and youths don't want to work. They are all waiting for free cars, free salaries/allowances as public officers of one thing or another. Every elite has abandoned work for free money. Activists, pastors, professionals in different fields, etc. are looking for political appointments here and there. Timi Alaibi, Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, Tompolo, Asari Dokubo, Goodluck Jonathan, Uduaghan, James Manager, Macaulay, Utuama, Godswill Orubebe, James Ibori, Peter Odili, Ifeanyi Okowa, David Edevbie, Godwin Obaseki and others, all made their wealth between 1999 till date within the public space.

Apart from Kenneth Gbagi, Great Ogboru and very few others, none of them were significant in anywhere in the Niger-Delta region before 1999. Is it Buhari that made these people billionaires?

Until our people think properly, this narrative will continue to be the detriment of the masses. As for Oshiomhole, he became significant through his leadership role in the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC). What factories or businesses do these Niger Delta elites owned before 1999 that made them financially significant? What business do these so-called activists and militants in the Niger Delta do that made them become billionaires between 1999 till date? What are the sources of their income and wealth? Mandela was a high-profile activist but he was never a billionaire, rather he lived on sheer goodwill. This is not to ridicule the activists, agitators, elites and politicians in the Niger Delta region. But it is to draw the fact that we are the ones creating our problems. The same people complaining of marginalization and deprivation are the same people feeding recklessly from the regions collective resources and wealth meant to improve the lives of all and sundry. It is that same people that now turn around to blow trumpets of being marginalized.

The Nigerian elites and the ordinary people don't think, and nobody will think for them. No foreign president will fix Nigeria. They have their own problems in their countries. Nigeria is drifting aimlessly because that is the choice of the Nigerian people.

Zik Gbemre.
