JAMES IBORI REMAINS THE MAJOR POLITICAL NUISANCE AND OBSTACLE STAGNATING AND OBSTRUCTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF DELTA STATE – THOSE STILL RUNNING AFTER HIM ARE PART OF THE ENEMIES OF OUR STATE’S PROGRESS
Exconvict picture of James Onanefe Ibori
Truth be told, no sane person in his or her rightful mind and thinking faculty, would want to have anything to do with James Onanefe Ibori, the supposed former Governor of Delta State, who ascended to that position in the first place on deception, and whose character, personality, orientation about public service, past and present actions in and out of office, have never been, and will never be; in the overall interest of the people of Delta State. James Ibori remains the political nuisance and ‘virus’ that has continued to eat deep and deaden everything good in Delta State, which ought to bring about rapid transformation in the State, right from the moment he stepped into Delta State politics from 1999 till date. Anyone, who is still supporting Ibori, drumming support for him in any way, or saying/writing anything good about him, especially as it concerns Delta State’s politics and economy; such an individual is not only a bird of the same feather with Ibori, but he/she should be seen and regarded as the true enemy of the State’s developmental strides and progress.
Ibori cannot be said to be worth being an ounce of a leader, in all ramifications. Ibori’s name alone, and one being associated with him, will bring condemnation and ill-luck to one, especially in the international scene where Ibori’s name and record reeks of fraud/thievery/deceit/criminality and what have you. No propaganda, paid-writing, galvanizing/rallying support can erase/disregard or make Deltans/Nigerians forget the fact that IBORI REMAINS AN EX-CONVICT, whose trade and stock in the last two decades and up till now, has been the pilfering and misappropriation of Delta State’s collective wealth to satisfy his insatiable extravagant lifestyle and thirst for power/control. So, those Delta elites and politicians who still call him their leader and who still look up to him, are not only criminals like Ibori but they have also become shameless ‘robots’ and ‘zombies’ who are following Ibori like fools to the slaughter. Just like Fela’s song once said: “Zombie o, zombie (Zombie o, zombie); Zombie o, zombie (Zombie o, zombie); Zombie no go go, unless you tell am to go (Zombie); Zombie no go stop, unless you tell am to stop (Zombie); Zombie no go turn, unless you tell am to turn (Zombie); Zombie no go think, unless you tell am to think (Zombie).” – That is exactly what Ibori has turned most of these Delta State politicians and Urhobo leaders/elites into. Some of them are still referring to Ibori as the "Odidigborigbo" of Africa. What a big shame!
This is why we are appalled and greatly amazed with shock at the circulated invitation to Urhobo leaders/PDP politicians of Warri South and Patani LGAs, for a supposed ‘Expanded Delta Central PDP Stakeholders Meeting scheduled to hold at Oghara, which was called/directed by James Ibori and signed by Ighoyota Amori. We have noted before now that Ibori, now including Amori - do not have the right, the integrity, the clout and authority to call for any sort of Urhobo gathering. LET IT BE KNOWN, AND REITERATED HERE THAT THE ONLY RECOGNIZED VOICE AND AUTHORITY THAT CAN SPEAK FOR, AND ON BEHALF OF THE URHOBO NATION, IS THE URHOBO PROGRESS UNION (UPU) LEADERSHIP, AND NOT IBORI AND HIS SELFISH AND SENSELESS FOLLOWERS. Urhobo nationalities have only the UPU as the recognized known authority that can call the meeting for all Urhobos. UPU is the only ‘umbrella’ for all Urhobos, which includes Ibori and Amori. Ibori and his fronts in Government should not drag the Urhobos into their dirty self-centered politicking. The UPU was founded by Chief Mukoro Mowoe and other Urhobo leaders of his era. So, Ibori and Amori should be warned not to drag the Urhobo nation into their selfish ambitions and interests. Chief Mukoro Mowoe can be likened as the grandfather of the Modern Urhobo Nation. These are people that have sacrificed and contributed greatly to the growth of the Urhobo Nation and the interests of its people, and not the likes of James Ibori, whose name alone only reminds us of what our children and future leaders should never turn out to become.
While Ibori has the right to speak for himself, his family and the few greedy PDP members who have sold their birthrights over a plate of rice, as his flock of supporters, but the fact still remains that IBORI CANNOT SPEAK FOR THE URHOBO NATION OR CALL FOR ANY GATHERING OF ALL URHOBO LEADERS/POLITICIANS. Aside the fact that Ibori does not have the integrity, the public support, the authority and the capacity to speak for, and on behalf of the Urhobo Nation, he is also an ‘old wound’ whose past and present actions have never been in the interest of the Urhobo Nation and Delta State as a whole.
What is more worrisome about all of this is the fact that some Delta State supposed leaders/elites and politicians still ‘take orders/directives/instructions’ from this ex-convict called Ibori. For them to accept, and still follow Ibori as their supposed leader is really offensive, degrading and rather unfortunate. Shame on them – that an ex-convict, who stole their collective wealth, is still the one leading them. It goes to show that these Delta State politicians, supposed leaders and elites really do not have integrity. Any society that ‘voluntarily and willingly’ allows itself to be led/controlled/manipulated by the likes of Ibori, that society and its people are in serious trouble. You cannot travel abroad and say you are associated with Ibori, especially in any business or corporate dealings. You will be immediately likened unto a criminally-minded person that can never be trusted. Unfortunately, that is the kind of person some Delta State Politicians and Urhobo leaders are still flocking around and following him like “Zombies” being dragged to the slaughter.
Ibori is someone that never meant well for Deltans. He is more consumed by his selfish desires, ambition for power and control, so as to continue ‘living large above others’ and having them at his beck and call. That is why Ibori never really wanted, or liked to see any ‘strong opposition’ in the State that would threaten/challenge his position in Delta State politics, especially if it is an individual that has legitimate business and financial strength. Even if that person is within Ibori’s party – The PDP in Delta State, he does not like such development, hence he is ready to do anything to remain the ‘only voice’ and ‘political stronghold’ in Delta State. All that talk about Ibori spearheading the struggle for Resource Control in the region, is all rubbish. Ibori was just forming his so-called genuine agitation for resource control back then because his primary reason for doing so was to have more access to steal more money. All that noise then, was to deceive the people. It was never meant for the interest of the people of Delta State and the region. In case we do not know, Shell (SPDC) started leaving/exiting Delta State as far back as year 2000, during Ibori’s time in Office. That was the same period we started writing to advise Ibori to stop this from happening. But he was more consumed with promoting/encouraging youth violence, youth restiveness, and youth hostilities in Delta State. Whereas, his counterpart then, in Rivers State, Peter Odili, was at the same period busy creating a conducive environment, which oil companies/private businesses found attractive and started relocating to Port-Harcourt gradually but steadily. Though, Shell (SPDC) eventually left during Emmanuel Uduaghan’s tenure in office, but that movement started way back under Ibori.
Truth is, there is no difference between Ibori and Idi Amin of Uganda. They both have similar style of leadership. Ibori’s ultimate desire have always been to establish and sustain ‘The Ibori’s dynasty’ in Delta State politics. That was part of the reason why he came with youth rascality and criminality in the State, which we started writing and warning him about since 2005, and throughout his time in office as supposed Governor, to stop it. In case we have forgotten, Ibori deceitfully made his way to become Delta State Governor in the two times he was there. Even the prosecuting Queen Counsel, Sasha Wass, that read the Southwark Crown Court, UK, judgement against Ibori when he was facing a 10 – count charge brought against him by the British Metropolitan Police for money-laundering involving sums amounting to at least 50 million pounds ($66 million), and conspiracy to defraud Delta State; NOTED THEN THAT IBORI, HAD “TRICKED” HIS WAY INTO BECOMING A GOVERNOR BETWEEN 1999 AND 2007, BY GIVING FALSE DATE OF BIRTH AND CLAIMING HE HAD NO CRIMINAL RECORD. “HE WAS NEVER THE LEGITIMATE GOVERNOR AND THERE WAS EFFECTIVELY A THIEF IN GOVERNMENT HOUSE. AS THE PRETENDER OF THAT PUBLIC OFFICE, HE WAS ABLE TO PLUNDER DELTA STATE’S WEALTH AND HAND OUT PATRONAGE,” said Wass.
For eight years, Ibori systematically stole and looted Delta State funds to fund his lavish and exorbitant lifestyle of fast cars and luxury properties. Ibori, who could not be prosecuted in Nigeria, was eventually convicted by the said UK Crown Court Southwark for money laundering and fraud. Ibori was said to have often deposited the stolen money in cash in UK Banks like Barcklays, where Ibori was said to have at least Six Accounts, as also his sister, his wife and mistress, which they used to launder millions of Delta State’s money.
It is important to note that Ibori’s thievery did not start today. In fact, his life has been a life of a criminally minded individual who is ready to do anything to maintain his lavish lifestyle. Ibori moved to the UK in the 1980s; was convicted of stealing from DIY Shop Wickes in 1991; Convicted of credit card fraud in 1992; allied himself to Nigeria's then military ruler Sani Abacha in 1993 to 1994; became Delta State Governor between 1999 to 2007, during which he committed the mother-of-all-thievery; in 2007, his UK assets worth $35m were frozen; Arrested in Nigeria on corruption charges in December 2007, but a Nigerian court suspiciously dismissed all the charges in 2009; and in April 2010,Ibori's supporters attacked police (EFCC) as they tried to arrest him in Oghara. Ibori left Nigeria shortly afterwards. Ibori went to Dubai thereafter, where he was arrested in 2010 by the Government and transferred/extradited to the UK to face trial in May 2011; before he finally pleaded guilty to money-laundering in the said London court in 2012.
We had to recall this summary of Ibori’s escapades to sort of remind Deltans and Nigerians of the kind of man Ibori has been, and obviously will always be. Some might argue that Ibori, as a supposed ex-governor, is entitled to some privileges, as reflected in the Nigerian Constitution. But we can see that Ibori was not even qualified to be a Governor in the first place because he had lied about his real age, and that he had no criminal record. If it were to be in a civilized society, Ibori would not even stand a chance to contest in any election or be involved in any sort of politicking. In fact, the discovery of his past record and conviction, is enough to have Ibori banished from the State and country’s politics for life. But even now that he has deceptively found his way to power, and as a supposed ex-governor, that does not mean Delta State should remain Ibori’s milk-cow, which he uses to be funding all his reckless activities and private businesses. That does not mean the Delta State Government should be funding Ibori’s hired/chattered private jets, which he uses to move around. He remains an ex-governor, and worse still, an ex-convict, and should be treated as such, and not like a sitting governor who determines how, and where to spend the State’s money.
With all of this, anyone who still praises/rallies support for Ibori, be it through the internet (online) platforms, or through paid writers/bloggers and what have you; such persons are birds of the same feathers with Ibori. I have never seen anywhere in the world, where a person who was convicted by the all-mighty UK that is a global power, for money laundering and fraud, and that person went to jail, but still comes out to become a supposed ‘HERO’ of his people. No normal human being in his/her right senses would want to have anything to do with such an individual. Especially when the said person concerned, has not shown any sort of remorse or repentance over the atrocities he has committed against his State and people. That is the story of Ibori in Delta State.
If the Delta State elites and political leaders do not see anything wrong with all of this, then we are greatly doomed as a people. For someone who has stolen money meant for the development of his people, and went to jail for it; to now come back to continue from where he stopped, and some persons are still following him about, it shows that something is seriously wrong somewhere. I was not the one that convicted and sent Ibori to prison. People do not plead guilty for the crimes they did not commit. You only plead guilty, when the evidences brought against you have overwhelmingly proved you committed the crime, and as such, the “guilty plea” becomes the next line of action. Obviously, Ibori willingly admitted to have committed the corruption charges leveled against him in the UK because he actually did commit the crime. So, no matter how some may try to paint this, it does not suggest that Ibori’s famous ‘guilty plea’ did not happen or was he coerced or forced in any way to admit he committed the crime. This fact, cannot be washed away or taken for granted.
Rather than Ibori to repent and keep a low profile, he is already planning ahead of 2023 to install his loyal boys at sensitive positions in, and around Delta State Government, to continue from where others would stop come 2023. We ask again, should we all keep quiet, fold our hands and pretend that all is well? Should we all sit back, and allow an ex-convict who has reaped the State’s public funds to a bleeding point, to continue to hold Delta State to ransom and captivity? God forbids! An ex-convict cannot, and should not be allowed to come and obstruct the State’s development and progress. Ibori’s hold on Delta State should urgently be undone for Delta State to experience true democracy and development.
