IT IS ONLY A 'COSMETIC NATIONAL ASSEMBLY' THAT WOULD FOCUS ATTENTION ON REGULATING COSMETICS/BLEACHING CREAMS, THAN FOCUS ON BANNING/REGULATING THE USE OF FIREARMS BY HERDSMEN AND ADDRESS OTHER INSECURITY ISSUES IN NIGERIA

When I recently saw news report that a resolution to ensure the regulation of the formulation and distribution of cosmetics, especially bleaching cream, was passed by Nigerian Senators on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, I could not help but wonder who has done this to us as a nation? When have we degenerated this low and senseless, to no longer know how to set our 'priorities aright' and only focus on those things that are far more important for the nation's growth and progress? What sort of leaders do we always end up having in the Government space?
I mean, how can members of the highly exalted Red Chamber of the National Assembly, leave very pressing national security issues that are daily threatening our existence as a people and as a united country, to now focus on addressing the use of bleaching creams in the country? Should this even be part of our national discuss?
Apparently, it was Senator Remi Tinubu, who according to reports, raised the motion during plenary to urge the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to wake up to its supposed responsibility to protect Nigerians against harmful cosmetics. But the question is, what about the protection of Nigerians from rampaging highly-armed Boko haram/herdsmen/bandits, who have been having a field day in Niger State and other parts of the country; killing, rapping, maiming and kidnapping innocent Nigerians?
What stand has the Senate taken to address this insecurity menace once and for all? What have they done to checkmate the indifferent attitude and excesses of the Executive Arm under the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration in addressing the insecurity situation in the country? What is the essence of having lawmakers as the Legislative Arm means to represent the various interests of Nigerians in their Constituencies, when no one is safe anymore in their location? And no one is sure of their safety anymore.
Seeing such actions by our politician Senators, should clearly tell us all that indeed, we really don't have political leaders in this country, who are ready to make the needed sacrifice and commitment, to address the myriad of problems daily making life unbearable for the average Nigerian. It is as if once they get into Government, and into the National Assembly, they practically lose their sense of reasoning and direction, as to what to do in addressing the problems in the county. With such leaders, I think only a divine intervention that will turn things around in the interest of the common man. God help us in this nation!
