IN CONDITION OF THE END-SARS PROTEST IN DELTA STATE

With the reported increase of protests, which have taken place in several cities across the country, with demonstrators demanding that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a police unit accused of extensive abuse and extortion, be abolished, I consider it necessary to however lend my voice in condemnation of the said End-SARS protests in Delta State, which is believed to be allegedly sponsored by internet fraudsters, otherwise known as yahoo-yahoo boys.

For one, this is hinged on the fact that the said protests have led to the killing of persons, including a police officer in Ughelli. It was reported that hoodlums had hijacked an End-SARS protest in Otovwodo area of Ughelli, overpowered two policemen on duty, disarmed one of them and shot him to death with his rifle. The second policeman was said to have been seriously wounded and is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital. The hoodlums also destroyed several vehicles. The supposed protesters also carted away one (1) service AK47 rifle with breach no 56-2609008 and 25 rounds of live ammunition that was with the deceased at the time of the incident, according to reports.

To me, this is no longer a protest, but something that is not only allegedly sponsored, but has turned into something else and allowed to go too far.

Agreed that indeed, there are genuine concerns by majority of Nigerians about police brutality and excesses on Nigerian roads, but it should be expected that if there should be any sort of public protest in this regard, such should be done peacefully and directed to the appropriately authorities of the Police and the government. Allegedly sponsoring such protests, or hijacking same to take the lives of persons, is not only cruel and inhuman, but should be condemned by all.

I also believe that the parents/guardians and  relatives of these youths that are directly involved with what has been happening in Delta State over this End-SARS issue, should call their children to order, get them to stop all of these protests, and stop provoking security operatives, which would further aggravate any crises between the security operatives and civilians.

I have seen videos of some of these young people provoking security operatives drafted to maintain law and order. Such rascality should stop.
