IN CONDEMNATION OF TRUMP SUPPORTERS INVASION OF US CAPITAL HILL - TRUMP SHOULD CALL HIS SUPPORTERS TO ORDER

With reports that Donald Trump supporters took to rioting, arson and violence at the US Capitol, as the Congress convened to certify Joe Biden's win, we strongly condemn this barbaric invasion by Trump supporters, which has turned into a protest taken too far.

The said violence, which has led to a woman being killed in police firing, while three others died in medical emergencies, is clearly not worth all the quest to have the US Congress overturn the final outcome of the Presidential election. Though, The US Congress resumed session and went on to certify 306 votes in favour of Joe Biden's victory, I believe it is high time for Donald Trump to accept the outcome of the election after contesting it legally, and also call his supporters to order.

It is a shame that the US, regarded as the frontrunners and flag bearers of Democracy, are the ones behaving like most third world countries still struggling to entrench true Democracy in their electoral process.

With what has happened in the US, 'it will take a long time to repair the damage done to America's reputation after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building, and desecrated the once revered and admired historic building and Seat of Power in the US.

Trump, should not just give up and accept to orderly transition of power, he should take responsibility for the damage and carnage caused by his ardent supporters during this period. This is no way to retain political power.

As noted by former President Goodluck Jonathan, no quest for political power should worth the blood of anyone. What is currently happening in the US should also cause those who never appreciated what Jonathan did in 2015 to have a rethink. Agreed that Jonathan had his own flaws, but he also had staunch supporters then, and he could have refused defeat. Nigeria could have gone up in flames. It would have affected West Africa. But his power of love was greater than his love for power, according to Reno Omokri. "I hope those who vilified Jonathan for conceding in 2015 can now see that it was neither easy, nor an act of cowardice. It took more hits and strength to concede than it does to conflict."
