HAILING/PRAISING GOVERNOR OKOWA FOR DOING WHAT HE IS EXPECTED TO DO, IS NOTHING SHORT OF GROSS IGNORANCE

When I recently saw news headlines that the Deputy Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt.

Hon Christopher Ochor Ochor, has hailed commanded Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and the State Commissioner for Works, Mr. James Aguoye, for the initiative to work on the bad portions of Federal Road that connects Agbor/Umutu/Obiaruku/Abraka and Eku roads, which had been in a very bad state for almost two years, I simply consider it as a clear case of complete ignorance and a very wrong mindset that we seriously need to change in this part of the world.

They say Ignorance, is truly a disease of the mind and it is almost like having a dementia that is just too difficult to cure. When I see such rain of praises by the elites and society Stakeholders, on a Government for carrying out one infrastructural project or the other, the first question I think that needs to be asked is: Is it the people's responsibility to construct roads? Is it not the constitutional responsibility of Governor Okowa in this case, to build/construct/repair basic infrastructure in Delta State? So, why all the usual press reporting and publicity stunts on such kind of story? Why make it such a big deal? Why make it look like the Governor is doing the people a great favour for embarking of such road repairs, or any other infrastructural project for that matter? This is a really big problem we have in this country.

The funds that were used for the supposed construction of the said roads by Governor Okowa, were not his personal money. But the said road repairs project was fully funded with Delta State’s collective wealth. So, praising Okowa for doing what he was elected to do is uncalled for.

Governor Okowa sought to be elected the Governor of Delta State. That means he should understand what it means to perform the STATUTORY DUTIES of a Governor. So, it is Okowa's responsibility to construct/repair these basic infrastructures within the State, even if it is a Federal Government road. All these hailing and praising of the Government whenever they embark on or carry out the execution of essential public projects/programs, should stop because it is like a father being praised for providing food and clothes for his infant child. If the father cannot handle the responsibilities that comes with fatherhood, then he should not have any business in the first place of bearing children. Doing so, without owning up to the responsibility of being father, is just an irresponsible father, plain and simple.

It is even more annoying to see how the Governments in these part of the world, relish and expect such hailing and praises from those loyal to them. Many of them even go to the extent of singing their own praises and sponsoring such publicity stunts of showcasing what they have done, via print and electronic media. All geared towards trying to create the impression that they are supposedly working in the eyes of the public.

The elegant infrastructures built in the beautiful city of Dubai in United Arab Emirates (UAE), London, New York, Atlanta, Augusta, Paris, Manchester, Edmonton, Banff, Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Birmingham, Marseille, Berlin, Jacksonville, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Tilburg, Moscow, Saint Paul, Rochester, Munich, Frankfurt, Dallas, Miami, etc., were built by political leaders in power in those countries where these cities are located. But we don't see them make noise about it. All these beautiful cities that I have mentioned, were designed and constructed by politicians in power, using government’s funds. Most of our ignorant politicians and elites that are praising themselves, have traveled far and wide in these foreign cities and have seen the modern transport infrastructure there. What stops them from replicating same at home in Nigeria? It is only in Nigeria that when a political leader manages to execute few kilometers of a road, they would roll out the big drums, invite the press, organize women in their “asoebi clothes”, print and post banners/billboards with their names inscribed on it; just to tell the world of their supposed 'great achievement.' Let's not forget the fact that most of these projects, particularly the road projects in Delta State, are always substandard and do not last. And the people sing their praises over such display of stupidity. What a shame!

I am surprised sometimes, with the show of ignorance by our supposed Nigerian elites, who ought to know better, but they are still backward and think like people of the STONE AGE ERA. All these substandard roads that don't last even through the tenure of Okowa's administration, are what some persons are celebrating. Celebrating ignorance. That is evident sad reality of the stupidity and height of ignorance exhibited by our so-called Nigerian elites. When will they ever grow-up and be bold enough to stand for the truths?
