FOOD FOR THOUGHT – ON THE TRUTH MOVEMENT FOR THE RELOCATION OF DELTA STATE CAPITAL FROM ASABA TO WARRI
It is funny how up till now, the Delta South and Delta Central politicians and elites are comfortable with Asaba as the capital city of Delta State, when in actual fact the State capital ought to be the city of Warri, based on historical grounds.
Let it be reiterated here that Warri, which was the Colonial Capital of the then Warri Province, remains the most appropriate and most suitable city-area for the Capital of Delta State. We cannot hide or deny the truth permanently. The Truth, no matter how long it will take, will eventually come out. Deltans from Delta South and Delta Central should not shy away from correcting this wrong and oppression. Upright and well-meaning Deltans should stand for the Truth, no matter how hard it might seem, or who and what is involved.
Again, I know that my critics, most of who are Delta State Government agents, will say Zik Gbemre has started his “noise ranting” again, and that Zik Gbemre is a “trouble maker”, and that Asaba being the State Capital, is a “sealed deal” in history which we cannot reverse. But I beg to differ. Man is the one who makes history and not the other way round. Great minds live to “correct” anomalies in our society, especially past “historical errors” done out of ignorance, and done to oppress the voiceless people. This is the appropriate time to correct this particular error. For how long shall the politicians from the Delta South and Delta Central pretend that all is well, with Asaba as the supposed Provincial Capital of Delta State? I know some critics have said that Zik Gbemre is being sponsored to legally demand the Legislature to correct this great mistake of the past. But I repeat, I am not a politician, neither am I affiliated to any political party. This advocacy/agitation for the relocation of Delta State capital from Asaba to Warri, has nothing to do with the APC, PDP or any other political party for that matter. It is also not about me being sentimental. It is simply about standing for the bitter Truth, and demanding that a past error be corrected in the interest of all and for posterity. Those criticizing me for this agitation are very much aware in their hearts that I am on the path of truth and social justice.
Delta State Politicians from the Delta South and Delta Central are the one that should be more concerned about the relocation of Delta State Capital from Asaba to Warri, instead of being more interested in “political appointments” and “juicy portfolios” that are often short-lived. Political Appointments are temporary, but the relocated State Capital is a Permanent feature. The status of the Delta State Capital is a permanent thing and not their fringe benefits in Government. With the Delta State Capital at the appropriate place – Warri, it will bring about development and wealth for all.
Those criticizing the “bitter truth”, on the relocation of Delta State capital from Asaba to Warri, are pretenders who are living in denial. They know very well that Warri is the most appropriate city that should be Delta State’s Capital. Warri province was the original name of Delta Province. It is time for Nigerian politicians to correct this great error. We should all stand for social justice and freedom. Delta South and Delta Central politicians and elites should not live in denial and be cowards pursuing empty portfolios that will not last more than a couple of years. Whereas, the enormous benefits that would come to Delta South and Delta Central if Warri is made the State Capital, are far more than any portfolio they can think of.
All these portfolios without specific roles and functions will not help the people of Delta South and Delta Central. They are jobs "created for the boys" who aided Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to become Governor, through the collaboration of the INEC officials concerned. Of course, these empty portfolios and their salaries, allowances, vehicles and other fringe benefits, are enough to build standard infrastructural projects just as we see in Dubai of today. Yet, they clap and dance for these politicians for doing practically nothing. I don't know how all of this will develop our State. Imagine the oil city of Warri has no functional and standard airport. The Asaba airport is serving the interest of Onitsha traders paying taxes to the Anambra State Government and people. And our people are ignorant, daft and happy with all of this nonsense, as they shy away from telling Governor Okowa the truth.
The Nigerian legislature should support this movement of truth in Delta State to correct this injustice. We can't live and accept packs of lies in Delta State and pretend as if Asaba is the right location for Delta State’s Capital.
