FESTUS KEYAMO SHOULD KEEP TO HIS 'FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PROMISE' AS REGARDS THE OSUBI-WARRI AIRSTRIP UPGRADE TO A STANDARD AIRPORT
While we appreciate the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Chief Festus Keyamo (SAN), who said in recent reports that President Muhammadu Buhari has given approval for the Special Public Works Programme to kick off nationwide on Tuesday (5/01/21), and that 774,000 unemployed Nigerians, who will earn N20,000 monthly for three months duration of the job, have been enrolled into the programme as beneficiaries. However, I would also appeal to Festus Keyamo to stand and keep to his promise made to the South-South stakeholders as regards bringing back to life the Osubi Airstrip near Warri, Delta State.
Let us recall that it was about more than two months ago that Keyamo promised all South South and people of Delta State at the South-South Stakeholders meeting with the Representatives of the Federal Government of Nigeria in Port Harcourt, that the all-important Osubi Airstrip near the oil city of Warri, will function in a few weeks time. But up till now, that has not happened, and there are no iota of activity to suggest that something will happen any time soon for the said Osubi Airstrip to be upgraded to a standard Airport as planned.
I have great respect for Festus Keyamo, as an activist and campaigner of human rights. But this is not seen in his connection with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration that has failed the nation due to the high level of poverty, insecurity and falling economy under their watch.
Today, the exchange rate of the US Dollars and the British Pounds Sterling against the Nigerian Naira, has gone beyond any logical explanation. Even the reported 774, 000 jobs for Nigerians, is like a drop of water in the ocean of the unemployed youths in Nigeria. And what will N20, 000 a month do in the life of a Nigerian Youth? Not to mention one with a family, in the present economic realities in the country.
And for the fact that the Osubi-Warri Airstrip is still closed down, and no upgrade is seen up till now, despite all the promises, it does not speak well of Keyamo and the Buhari administration. What will Keyamo as a Minister of State, and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, as Deputy Senate President, tell their people after the expiration of this administration? Omo-Agege has failed to tell the President to do the needful as regards the Osubi-Warri Airstrip.
Also, what will Speaker Sheriff Oborevwori of the Delta State House of Assembly, tell his people for failing to convince Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to address the Osubi-Warri Airstrip functionality and upgrade, since Sheriff is from Osubi town in Delta state? It is really a shame for Speaker Sheriff Oborevwori that his own home town public project is still left abandoned till now.
The Osubi-Warri airstrip upgrade to a standard functional airport, and the Warri Sea Port development to a deep Sea Port, are all viable projects that will boast the Delta State economy if given the needed attention. But here we are in another year, yet nothing has been done to address these issues. What will they tell the people of the South-South after leaving Government and these projects are not done?
Keyamo, Omo-Agege and Sheriff Oborevwori should remember that there is life after government. And the seeds they are able to sow now while still in Government, will either speak for or against them when they leave Government.
