“DELTA STATE ROAD MASTER MY FOOT”
It is only in this part of the world that you will see political leaders who are very good at, and derive pleasure in singing their praises. And having others to sing their praises as well, even when it is evidently clear that they have been underperforming in their statutory functions. They forget that: when a masquerade dances, it is the onlookers that should praise his dance steps.
This is why we consider it necessary to reiterate the fact that the Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who has styled himself as a supposed “Road master”, can best be described as nothing but a complete sham. Let us look at this objectively and critically. How can a Governor be nicknamed/styled as a supposed Road Master, whereas the entire network of roads across the major cities of the State are in terrible states? What is the essence of being called the Road Master, which he gloats in, yet most of the major roads across the State are unmotorable and filled with serious potholes? Take for instance, the main highway roads leading from Effurun to Eku and down to Agbor, is currently terribly bad, and has become a nightmare to commercial transporters and private motorists. The entire Udu road, down to Jeremi junction, and to Iwhrekan and Okpare, is in a terrible state. Also, all the network of roads in the oil city of Warri and environs, especially in places like Ugboroke, Ekpan and evirons, including those in Ughelli, Agbor, etc. are all in a bad state. Yet, we have a Governor supposedly called the Road Master. What exactly is he the master of? Definitely not roads!
With evident bad network of roads, and other public-utility-infrastructure in non-existence or at their worst deplorable state; litany of abandoned infrastructure projects that were/and are still being used as avenues to siphon State funds; Government still in debts and a ‘sustained culture’ of mismanagement/misappropriation of public funds in government spaces, etc. – why then would anyone be calling and praising the Delta State Governor as a supposed Road Master? It simply does not make any sense at all!
Though, we are not entirely surprised because this is very typical of the PDP-led Delta State Government. Never have we seen or witnessed a Government that loves to use all kinds of ‘publicity and propaganda stunts’ to make itself look good in the eyes of the world, like we have seen exhibited by the present Delta State Government. Such publicity stunts are often coated with ‘sweet talks/write ups/Public Presentations/Publicities’ and what have you, which are specifically tailored to please only the eyes and ears, but are also all aimed at ‘deceiving’ the public.
The whole ‘publicity and propaganda stunts’ and self-praise-singing by the Okowa-led Delta Government are all part of their usual grand design to create the deceptive atmosphere they want. But many of us are not deceived by such charade, facade and sham. Delta State, like every other State in Nigeria, is where the political leaders praise and congratulate themselves for achieving little or nothing in their constituencies and political domain. It is so demeaning. It all goes to show the extent the “culture of mediocrity” and the “absence of excellence” that has eaten deep into the fabrics of our society. It is an attitude that has trickled down from the very top of the State to the bottom, with its symptoms showing up in our society; from bad governance to bad service to bad craftsmanship. Where excellence meets no gratification, what remains to be celebrated is under-achievement.
Truth be told, no sane man, who has Deltans wellbeing at heart, will call Governor Okowa as a supposed Road Master. Sometimes we, and many others wonder if Governor Okowa and his supporters/praise-singers actually have conscience at all. When a Governor cannot construct a road that can last throughout his tenure and also outlive him, then something is intricately wrong with that Governor’s administration.
