Building a Sustainable Automotive Manufacturing Ecosystem in Delta State

Building a Sustainable Automotive Manufacturing Ecosystem in Delta State

-By Kesiena Gbemre

There are recent reports that Peugeot and Renault are partnering with the Dangote Group and Coscharis Group to produce approximately 44,000 vehicles annually represent a significant and positive development for Nigeria’s industrial sector. This initiative reinforces the continued willingness of global automotive manufacturers to invest in markets where credible local partnerships, policy clarity, and a demonstrable commitment to industrial growth are present.

This development highlights Nigeria’s capacity to rebuild a sustainable and competitive automobile manufacturing industry. Strategic alliances between international automotive brands and established indigenous conglomerates can catalyze the revival of local assembly operations, facilitate critical technology transfer, and reduce dependence on imported vehicles. Over time, this will strengthen the domestic manufacturing base and improve value retention within the economy.

The Delta State Government is well positioned to leverage this momentum. By prioritizing the provision of industrial land, upgrading critical infrastructure, and implementing investor friendly policies, the state can attract and sustain large scale automotive manufacturing investments. A facility of this magnitude has the potential to generate over 1,500 direct jobs, while also creating thousands of indirect employment opportunities across supply chains, logistics, and ancillary services.

Delta State’s abundant natural gas reserves present a distinct strategic advantage. Access to a reliable and cost-effective energy source enables the deployment of dedicated gas-powered turbines, ensuring consistent and efficient power supply for industrial operations. This energy security is a key determinant for investors evaluating large-scale manufacturing locations.

Beyond supporting existing partnerships, Delta State can adopt a proactive investment promotion strategy by engaging additional global automotive brands seeking entry into the Nigerian market. With well structured incentives, regulatory certainty, and a clearly articulated long-term industrialization roadmap, the state has the potential to emerge as a leading automotive hub driving industrial growth, employment generation, and economic diversification across the region.

Key Recommendations
 • Establish an Automotive Industrial Cluster in Delta State to concentrate infrastructure, suppliers, and assembly operations within a dedicated zone.
 • Provide targeted fiscal incentives for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) investors, including tax reliefs, import duty waivers on machinery, and streamlined regulatory processes.
 • Set up a state-led automotive/EV (Electric Vehicle) innovation task force to drive policy coordination, technology adoption, and future-facing mobility solutions.
